Just a quick one.

i noticed yesterday when filling, that the underside of my fuel cap is rusty as hell.

Could this mean it's not sealing properly?
 
The rubber sealing ring may need replacing, hence a good seal is not being provided.

The is atmosphere within the tank which also contains water vapour, and with variations in temperature condensation can appear on the cap underside, which will ultimately lead to corrosion.
