Fuel gauge not working

hi,
I am a new member to the classic rover forum and have a rover p6, when I bought it earlier this year the fuel gauge didn't work and it never bothered the previous owner, it would be nice to get it working again if possible but not sure how to go about it.
On closer inspection the gauge does move to just above empty weither I put £20 or £40 off fuel in it but never any further than that so not sure what tha problem is ...!!!

Pull both the wires off the sender (tank) unit (one is a supply the other an earth) and with the ignition on, earth the supply wire, if the guage goes full, join the two wires together, if the guage goes full again it's the tank unit at fault, if it doesn't it's a faulty earth connection. The floats can get holed and sink.

The gauge on my P6 didnt work when I bought mine, the reason, the previous owner had some body welding and the wiring loom to the back had been included in the process!
