Fuel Gauge Tank Unit Repair

Hi,

My fuel gauge hasn't worked since I got the car and checks pointed to a faulty tank unit. Finally got around to it and, sure enough, the plastic float was holed where it's held in the wire clip.

Has anyone repaired one of these? I'm thinking maybe 2-part epoxy but I'm not sure it would stand up to immersion in petrol :?:

What do you think guys? Anyone know for sure?

EDIT: The epoxy I have is National Adhesives Bondmaster - can't find a data sheet anywhere so far!

Take the float with you when you go to an autojumble and match it up with one fitted to something else. I would think that it's likely that it will be the same on other tank units supplied by Smiths (Assuming that is the maker) as they wouldn't want to make different types when one will do, after all, all it has to do is float........

Good point Harvey, I'll measure it up and keep the sizes for reference when I next see any at a jumble - always good to have a spare! :)

I'd like to try a repair on this one though if possible - provided I'm not going to gum things up!

Cheers,

Stan,
I replaced the sender on one of mine a few months back, I think the float is ok. IM me your address if your stuck and I'll pop it in the post. I'm in Dublin for the week but I think it's in the boot of my car. If not I'll grab it in the workshop at the weekend and send it.
Regards,
Dave

Many thanks James,

Ian let me know he had them but I just had the seal and locking ring from him as Dave McSweeney had a used but good float he kindly sent to me.,,thanks again Dave! :D :D :D

Now fitted and working - and the fuel gauge works for the first time in (at least!) 2.1/2 years! :D

Cheers,

Hi,

Did think about that, but the hole was quite big and closing it up would mean pulling material from close by and weakening that area.

For the hole to appear in the first place must mean there'd been some flexing or fretting going on anyway, and I didn't want to risk having to do the job again. Now I've got a replacement, I might try it on the old one to see what happens! 8)

Cheers,

Stan,
glad to hear it finally turned up!Must get my own guage going now! Have replaced the sender, confirmed it works, replaced the voltage regulator and checked the guage, working, and now I've got a break in the cable! Makes the drive a bit more interesting though!
Regards,
Dave
