fuel leak - leak at fuel tank

Hi all,

I have got a problem with a fuel leak on my 1975 3500s, just wandered if anyone could advise me.

My car has the reserve tap under the bonnet which was also leaking but is now sorted, the problem is i have a constant drip from the main fuel pipe coming out of the bottom of the tank i have put the car up on stands to get a better look and it seems to be coming from the joint in the metal tube that is connected to the main plastic fuel line. From what i can see there looks to be two nuts on this pipe next to each other the lower of the two has a smaller pipe going in to it the return pipe i presume, am i right in thinking that this is a compression joint and the nuts tighten against each other ?.

Their is movement in the joint between the two nuts and the metal pipe coming down from the tank i am wandering and hoping, if it just needs tightening up a bit to stop the leak and how the heck to get two spanners in there to tighten them up seems a bit fiddly.

any comments much appreciated,

How did you do this? The V8 I've just acquired has a leak from that tap and I need to fix it.

Also the gauge doesn't work - where is the sender unit please? I can't see anything obvious on the tank so wonder if it is on the front or side somewhere out of sight.

If you check back thru previous posts you'll find your petrol reserve tap problem, and details of how to fix it posted by ianp6man.
the fuel gauge tank unit is underneath the car where the petrol pipes come out. If you remove the wire and earth it with the ignition on, if the gauge works the tank unit is u/s.

To scanner re Reserve tap leak. The "Rover Repair Operation Manual" states remove the reserve tap. This appears to be physical impossibility on a V8. Whoever wrote it must have been thinking of the four cylinder P6. However you can replace the O ring using one hand only with the other holding a torch, etc.
1. Slacken the bolt holding the reserve cable onto the tap
arm.
2. Get someone to pull back the cable until it clears the arm. You must hold onto the bolt during this or it will drop away.
3.Carefully slacken the small steel screw on top of the tap housing. Remove it by hand and withdraw it. Do not drop it or it will disappear never to be seen again.
4.Remove the interior of the tap and replace the O ring.
As the manual would say: Reassembly: Reverse 1 to 4
I forgot to mention either drain or siphon sufficient fuel from the tank until it is below the level of the reserve tap.
The reserve tap on my V8 is located behind the engine above the starter motor hence the difficulty in access.
