fuel tank repair

Gentlemen, I'm servicing my fuel tank and have got the lock ring off and reinstalled the level indicator unit. Now, how do I re-seal the tank unit in order to avoid leaks? Is there a special rubber seal or what kind of sealing do I need?? cheers, Chris Varming

It should have a cork gasket on it IIRC. I vaguely remember putting some Indian head shellac on mine and tapping the ring home with a small punch. Never leaked again.

Just a quick question before Christmas is catching up with you.... Does the sealing ring for gauge unit need any sort of gasket compound before it is installed or do I just fit it and then the unit clamp ring? And then a merry Christmas to you all. Chris Varming+++

I did not use any special compound when I removed and replaced my fuel level sender. I had no problems with leaks. I just drove the ring tight with a drift.

Mmmm, goes towards explaining my leak, then. Don't you love inheriting a bodge???

hi chris,
no sealent needed, just tighten the locking ring as far as it will go and that will seal it.
