Hi all,

I've always found (older) tractors easy to work on. Simple, reliable mechanical components and excellent access. Routing servicing aside our Ford 6610 had need little attention over the last 10 years, until this happened. It lost drive, 3 point linkage and power take off. It has two input shafts, one fed from the clutch, and one 'live drive' straight from the flywheel. Of course, unlike a car, the gearbox in a tractor forms part of the structure, and is hidden underneath the cab, surrounded by fuel tanks(which I'd filled the day before). And the shaft had to be removed from the rear. And, of course, everything on a tractor is much heavier! I think I'll stick with cars from now on!

They are a bit different to work on, aren't they? We had a David Brown 990 on the farm when I was a kid and I used to get quite grubby and involved when it needed fixing. Most of our issues were bearing failures for the rear wheel reduction drive.
 
That's not good! Never owned one of those, in fact they were never popular in our area. We grew up around Ford 5000s. I was sad to see ours go 10 years ago but the 10 series was a revelation with the super Q cab and synchro box. We still do run a Dexta though!

Wow!, that's amazing. The Old Man had 2 Dextas, but they were sold on before I was born and replaced with the 990. He added a MF 135 later, also a wonderful tractor, never gave a day's hassles, too.

The DB reduction was at the hub end and the big inner bearing of the wheel shaft used to fail. The worst one was in a field with a 3 furrow plough on the back, it was interesting jacking that lot up with the good side on hard ground and the bad one in the furrow from the last pass....

If I had the space and spare cash, I'd buy up old tractors and fix them up.
Just for giggles, I'd do one of these.... The Irish Single Seater Series... ;):D

An uncle of mine is still keeping his 5000. It never asked for anything major like your new fangled 6610! :p

That looks scary! That's the problem with most tractor breakdowns, it's when they are worked hard! Mine died just as it entered the yard but just about had enough to move out of the way, plus the third hydraulic pump, driven off the engine allowed the loader to work so we could remove it. Believe it or not the Dexta actually towed it in for repairs!!! We originally bought it as a row crop tractor when we grew strawberries commercially, but it still finds work.

That must be worth far more than my 6610. I recently considered a 6640 SLE but that would be a bit too modern and I was advised to avoid it! The synchro is great, especially with duel power, but it's not a true shuttle box so a bit painful for loader work in comparison to the old 5000. Ours went for export to Africa when we sold it and is probably still working hard! It was a 1970 force model with the safety frame cab, fitted with a 6600 engine, the only major component ever replaced in it. There is a long story following that engine, but as this is the Rover forum I'd better leave it out lol!
