If the car has been left standing for a while the chances are that the converter has drained back into the gearbox, artificially raising the fluid level, and causing the leak.

It won't cause any problems. If you want to avoid it happening in the future just run it every 2 or 3 days. It doesn't need to be run for long. The oil on the floor will look more than it is.

I have a similar problem after having the car standing for a good few weeks. Though it was leaking from the gasket so kept nipping it up every now and then but after reading several of these posts I'm beginning to think it might be this issue? If it is because it's been standing, where would the oil that's drained back leak from, is there a specific area I could look at to identify if this is where the problem lies? Many thanks.

All you can do is thoroughly clean the transmission and then it will be easier to see where the oil is coming from. Then if you cure those leaks you might be able to stop it happening, but if it is the converter draining back then the chances are that it will just find somewhere else to leak from.

Thanks Harvey. Sounds like it's a case of accept the fact that no matter how well you seal it all up you have to accept the inevitable that for a car that's nearly 50 years old.....it's going to leak somewhere. The joys of vintage motoring :). Will try to run it a bit more regularly to see if that helps.

Mine only dribbles a bit after runs now. If I leave it for >2 weeks there's enough on the drip tray to annoy me. I found a really good run is better than short runs?
But what is the simple fix for this? Surely replacing a valve or something? I can't imagine this is an inhearant part of the BW35 design.
