Glowing Ignition Light

Before Bruiser's enforced sojourn the ignition light was periodically glowing even under load & the interval has done nothing to cure it unfortunately. The alternator has been off & worked on more than once so if we assume (rightly or wrongly) that it's working correctly & the fan belt is properly tensioned, what else could be causing the fault?

If the ign light remains strong as the revs increase, then the two most likely causes are either the brushes need replacing or the voltage regulator does. In both cases the ammeter will show a disharge. If the ign light fades out as the revs rise and the ammeter appears normal, then the likely cause is the bridge rectifier, which will need replacing.

P5B alternators are externally regulated, (11AC) so if the one you've upgraded to on the P5B is the same as the original then it won't be am direct replacement for the 17/18ACR on Bruiser.

The one on the picture is a Bosch unit and all the regulation is internal like the later ACR units, so probably someone took care of the rewiring on this P5B.
Both my cars have these Bosch alternators (i converted when i fed up changing blown rectifier packs on the Lucas ones) and are a straight swap for Lucas ACR equipped cars.

That's right, It's all internal now. The guy (you probably know of him Harvey) modded the wiring to accept this unit. It all looks original & is simple to convert back if required. I'm thinking of seeing what he can do for Bruiser. He actually (electrically) re-conned the one on there now while I waited last time & it's still playing up. That's actually why I asked if there was anything else it could be.

Ok, so the light glows dimly,...the rectifier needs replacing then. To replace, unsolder the wires, remove and solder the new one in its place. Job done!

I've done that myself, then later had the local auto-sparks do it & as stated, still have a 'playing-up' situation occur. Hence my thoughts on getting a more modern unit fitted as originality doesn't bother me.

TRM I hope you get it sorted nicely! We're having a Bosch unit fitted to the SA V8. The connectors plug right in but it needs a bracket mod to work. I don't have model data but it could be the same type as the one Demetris mentions.

I took it to the sparks & the rectifier was partially destroyed. He reckoned it was working at about 20% of what it should have been (the fan belt was also a bit loose). The car's wiring was checked & given the all-clear & he said the 18ACR should be well up to the job of keeping up with Bruiser's electrical demands so he re-built it & all is now working as it should be & hopefully, will remain that way.

Good to know that I was right on the money..

And after he replaced it, the system now works properly!

Stina,

I think it is just good manners to say thanks when the advice that is given proves to be correct.

A bit of common decency hurts no one!

Only drawback with an ACR is that it doesn't come on charge till above tickover - well , mine doesn't

Tickover in the V8 is very low if it's set right , a slight touch of the throttle enough to extinguish the light .
I imagine yours doesn't come on as it doesn't like you :D
