Job number 1 on an ever growing list - Water Pump

The bearings were completely shot so had it refurbished. Brake master cylinder was empty when I picked up the car. I am currently going through the brakes.
NSF flexi was cracked. Stripped both calipers and bought seal kits with the intention to refurbish them myself but pistons where corroded . Local brake specialist were I bought the seals suggested to get them refurbished and replated. This turned out to be approximately the same price as doing the job myself. They now look fantastic. Replaced both flexis with HEL braded with black overs made up to suit.

Promised I'd add some photos of the PAS installation, which I am told is unusual on a 2200TC. It is activated by a switch on the dash

Re: GMR723N

Wow :LOL:nice big pics, I think we all go large with our first attempts at posting pics... try down sizing them to 800x800 or less before posting.

Re: GMR723N

Good to see your making progress Pat, the list is getting shorter. Hopefully soon be on the road.

Re: GMR723N

Hi Mick

Yes that's one more job off the list. I am eager to move on to sorting the rough running out; hoping this is just tuning - but it probably won't turn out that way.

I thought I had resized the pictures to 600 x 600 ; maybe I posted the originals by mistake ! doh

Bottom of engine and gearbox were covered in oil. The trail seems to go all the way up to the top of the engine. I have jizer-ed it all off and I have a new cam cover gasket to fit after checking tappets; old one hadn't been fitted properly. Will keep my eye on this; due to the quantity of the stuff not convinced this is the only leak. Are the 4 potters generally oil tight ?

I have the front wheels off and the car high on axle stands; I am amazed at just how solid the car is - 38 years old! I have had 6- 8 year old cars which are far worse in the past.

Just ordered some new hoses from Wadhams for the cooling system and pressure tested the rad while it was off with a mountain bike inner tube and some jubilee clips. Just PM'd a member who has a spare heater box as the matrix has been weeping at some point.

Should finish the brakes this week ; drivers side front then master cylinder ; still haven't found where the fluid has gone. The brake reservoir float ( which is metal) was eaten away ( moisture in fluid ? ). Got another from a scrapper this week.

Had a quick look under the back end. Looks like its been re-furbed at some stage. Back of hubs have new looking /stainless nylocs on and the trailing arms have been painted - so hopefully no nasty suprises. Boot floor all solid. Someone has been round with the waxoyl in the past. Did notice some slight oil staining of the diff area - hope this is not bad news.

... to be continued

Re: GMR723N

There's only three places for brake fluid to dissappear undetected: inside the covers of the rear brake calipers, inside the vacuum chamber of the servo and inside the cavities in the engine bulkhead. The latter ex the master cylinder. If you've checked all three, there's a real mystery!

Re: GMR723N

That's the car I wanted - V8 Monza Red; Black Leather ? Came across this 2200TC whilst looking and went to see it because it was local. It was so solid I bought it. Hopefully will have a V8 one day.

Re: GMR723N

Bit more progress.

Fitted new thermostat unblocked the bypass which someone had restricted with two gaskets and a home made shim ( why ?). Fitted and tensioned new fan belt.
Refitted radiator and new hoses.
Removed heater ( matrix was leaking ) swapped matrix from a good heater box, painted and ready to re-fit with new hoses
Sourced a good second hand bypass to heater pipe ( runs adjacent to cam cover) mine was rotten.
Removed brake master cylinder stripped overhauled with new seals and painted ready to re-fit.
Fitted good used brake reservoir cap and switch mine was eaten away.
Treated small patches of surface rust around lower engine bay / cross member primed and painted.
Replaced throttle cable.
Inspected tyres 2 have side wall damage and will have to be replaced before MOT anyone recommend a brand 165/80 R 14 ?
I've had a look at the rear brakes looks like the calipers have been refurbed or replaced. Will try to get away without touching them, pads are good.
There is some oil staining to the bottom of the diff crown wheel casing.

Jobs to do this week :-

Refit heater and hoses
Refit master cylinder
Chase up servo refurbisher, fit and bleed brakes finally !
Still need to source green switch knobs for interior lights and wipers mine are cracked and won't fit to the switch stems anyone got any ?
Replace speedo cable already sourced , needle is jumping up and down.

Make a start on the engine if you remember it is running rough
Compression test and check valve clearances.
If all is well I will go through ignition then carbs, i'm hoping there are no nasty surprises !

Hopefully this time next week I will be a lot closer to an MOT !

Re: GMR723N

Sounds like good progress - given the age of our cars I think we all uncover bodges and temporary fixes previous owners have put in place. Hopefully not too many surprises left for you.

Will leave it to the P6 owners in the forum to assist with your questions...

Re: GMR723N : More Progress but some bad news

Refitted reconditioned servo, rebuilt master cylinder and bled the brakes so they are now done. Heater went back in yesterday but will have to come out again as the bottom flap appears jammed; the air direction (up down ) lever appears jammed, not sure why.

The rear brakes look new as do the pads. Got in touch with a previous owner of the car and he confirmed he had rebuilt them so leaving well alone. Also confirmed he had rebuilt the de-dion tube and changed an engine side plate.

Now for the bad news.

Checked the valve clearances and all the inlets were fine between 8-10 thou. Unfortunately the exhaust valve clearances where as follows:-

( FRONT)0,0,11,(REAR)0

Zero means I can't get a 1 1/2 thou feeler gauge in. I was half expecting this but I am still p'd off. I need to do a compression check me thinks.

Took the plugs out to do the valve clearance check. The front two look ok but the back two look grey. Presumably this is carb related on a TC.

Is it worth trying to re-shim the engine or are the seats recessed? If the exhaust valves are not closing the compression check will be meaningless anyway.

Re: GMR723N

I'd set the clearances and then see what you end up with, it might all be fine. If not sort any problems out then.

Re: GMR723N

I think I will do the clearances. Is this a straightforward job ? I have done "cam out" clearances on motorbikes before.

Re: GMR723N

Engine bay looking clean and much more purposeful now that the gallon of north sea crude has been cleaned off it.
