GPS- LIghter

HI Guys

Is it ok to plug your GPS into your lighter on the rover 3500??
THe Reason i asked, and i cant say 100% that it was it, was that i did plug my navman into the lighter, it worked well and charged and all that, and recently it died, it was only 3 years old, i have since got a new one, but dont really want to repeat.

Has anyone else used their gps in their rover?

I use it on mine, and an FM transmitter when the Sat Nav is no in there.

The sound has gone on the Sat Nav now but I really can't see why this could be the socket's fault. Modern tech just breaks

I have a USB adapter plugged in there and run all sorts off it. As long as your car is neg earth (standard, I think, after '66??) you'll be fine. Remember to unplug it after use, as the cigar lighter is permanently live so will be constantly charging your device - that may have been the fate of the last one.....

Before you do, check the end of the lighter element for signs of use. If so, best to release the lighter housing from behind the dash rail and clean the brass contacts- you want a clean connection if you're running something electronic!

The adaptor will have regulation down to 5V for the USB, so this should cope with any fluctuation in voltage at the lighter socket. Plus the socket is just connected to the battery, same as it would be in any modern car, so I can't see how the damage was caused by the P6, unless perhaps your altenator is overcharging, might be worth just testing the voltage to be sure.

Probably find that the socket on the Navman began to part from the circuit board. my mates did. It was held with a few bits of solder and glue.

The cigar lighter is fine.
