GRRRRR!!!

All I need to get UCA ready for MOT is the speedo working.

Because I.ve fitted the ZF transmission, I have no cable drive.

So, I've ordered a drive from Dakota Digital. $299 plus postage. £216 total.

Expensive, but not a bank breaker.

Until it arrived in the good old UK.

BETWEEN THEM CUSTOM AND EXCISE, AND PARCELFORCE ADDED £55.84.

Customs added £42.34 VAT, (they charge VAT on the postage as well)
Parcelforce charged £13.50 Customs handling charge.

No choice but to pay the ransom, because that is what it is.

ANGRY Jim.

I normally get round that by asking if they will send it privately or mark it as sample!
Some will,some wont!
Alteratively I get a contact in the USA to buy it and send as a family item! :)
After, that is, doing my best to see if its available from a seller in the UK!

I once tried that with a UK supplier of ARP studs and all other things RV8 and I was treated like a leper.

Many others have helped, though...

Did we try having it shipped minus local taxes? Often a reduction is applied for items exported. Did this with a ring in USA once and statue in oz. value has to be honest but we may? Be able to pre arrange with supplier to slightly damage outer casing.. Not affecting performance and have it sold as a ' second' , thus half the value.
As long as customs sees! The damage ( marked white paint and label) it ought to concur it's value thus reducing the heavy import charges.

I hope you did know that a speedometer isn't included in the MOT test, therefore if its not working it isn't a fail.

It is always worth asking the seller to send the item via USPS (US post office) and not a courrier.
It is a standard practice for courrier companies to involve lengthly and costly affairs with the customs, even when it is not necessary, as they take their share out of it.

Yeah, too true!
My 2000TC passed its most recent test with non-functioning speedo, didn't even rate an advisory. D & G have sorted it since and I discovered how poor my judgement is - I've been consistently trundling around at about 27mph when I thought I was in the quasi-legal 33mph region.

Most testers never look at the speedo, they're moving a strange vehicle in usually constricted space and it's only on the brake rollers (very low speed) they might see the needle twitch.

If you'd bought it in the UK you'd still have to pay the same amount of VAT! What's the problem?

Not everything is more expensive than buying direct from the USA!
You just have to search it out!! :)
And if you cant find a better deal, here or indeed in Europe,
then if you want it you have no choice but to get it from the USA!

Ethel lost use of her speedometer and odometer when the original engine was removed. Even the trip counter has been frozen in time on 154 miles, 6 years later.

Ethel is getting her original engine and gearbox back this year and the period with the other engines will become known as "The Lost Weekend" once everything is back to how it was.
