handbrake cable

Is it possible to change the rubber boots on a handbrake cable?
Mine is off a 1964 Dunlop braked car and has only one boot which is split on it at the moment, should there be two?

Also can it be swapped with a more readily available later cable?

Even if you could get the boots you won't be able to get them over the fittings on the end of the cable. It looks like it should have a boot at each end, and they go on as the cable is assembled. I don't know of any other cable that would fit. All I could suggest is having a word with Speedy Cables, send them the pics showing the cable, and ask what they can do.

I am not sure there should be a boot. Is that part not enclosed by a larger gaitor below the handbrake and therefore covered?

The split boot can be repaired of sorts using heat shrink. I did this on an accelerator cable which had the same problem. Slide over a bit of heat shrink and when it is shrunk it does the job.

Not perfect but a 50p fix.

No, because the cable doesn't go all the way to the handbrake lever.

You could use boots from modern brake caliper pins they are shorter but could be glued together. Some are stretchy.

This is my repaired boot.

I had been thinking of using heatshrink on the burst end, but was wondering how effective it would be, but it looks ok on your cable arthuy.
Apart from no boot at the diff end the cable works fine.
