The handbrake switch is located on the rear of the handbrake lever assembly, beneath the tunnel finisher.
Do your brake pads have wear indicators fitted, and are they plugged in? Someone else will know for sure, but from memory, if there are no wires or they are not plugged in, then the light won't function when the handbrake is operated.
My light was flickering, generally at motorway speeds, and the entire float assembly was knackered and eaten away - most of it was in fragments at the bottom of the reservoir. A good secondhand fluid reservoir cap sorted that out.
New pads on the rear brakes with wires ensures the light also now comes on with the handbrake which it never did before.
For the float, a plastic wine cork is a great substitute and won't sink eventually.
The brakepad warning circuit is parallel to the handbrake circuit, so the light should alway work with the handbrake regardless whether the pad sensors are hooked up.

That's incorrect, the handbrake switch is the check for the pad warning light system, if the pad warning light circuit is faulty the light won't work with the handbrake on.
