Heater Unit Resto

Guten Tag Mädchen und Jungs!

The tiring effects of our move last year are wearing off, we are getting settled and are very happy indeed! :p
I do hope everybody here is doing well :!: I got some catching up to do o see what we have missed.... .

(By the way: our holiday this year is bringing us to the UK again :!: :p :!: :p :!: )

Right now I am glad to have you here to answer all my heater unit questions!

I chose to store the pics I took of the (largely) dismanteled and roughly sandblasted box right here:

http://s1085.photobucket.com/user/trans ... t=2&page=1,

but I think most questions can be answered without viewing them.
(The heater motor and resistor are fault-free as far as we can say)

Here goes:
- Is there anything to improve when rebuilding? I would love to tune the heater fan, for example. Maybe there are "better" resistors available? How long do they last? Can I instal it somewhere more readily accessible in case it gives up working?
- Does the outside/fresh air flap open only WITH the fan coming into action - as was the case on Jimmy - or can I open that flap and then switch on the fan?
- What parts - hoses, rubber fittings/seals - can NOT be purchased seperately or at all?
- Is it important to replace rivets with rivets and screws with screws?
- What to look for in the hole and rubber seal UNDER the unit/on the body?
- Can I lose the damping material under and behind the heater unit? (Unwanted water storage)
- How are chances of replacing the lower windshield seal - or maybe even all windshield seals!?!?!?!? - now I´ve come so far?
- Has someone opened (AND CLOSED!) the linkage that is "riveted" directly to the axis of the flaps? I mean the three linkages coming from the heater levers in the interior where they are attached to the flaps with a toothed axis.
- Is the cooler/radiator available new? (EDIT: It is called heater matrix, as I found out...)

I think there are more questions coming along the way, but I can get started from here on next week after this

Don't know, I kept mine the same as it was always perfectly acceptable to me.

- Does the outside/fresh air flap open only WITH the fan coming into action - as was the case on Jimmy - or can I open that flap and then switch on the fan?

There are four settings:-
1 - at the top, flap closed heater motor off.
2 - first one down - flap open, heater motor off.
3 - second down - flap open - heater motor half power.
4 - at the bottom - flap open - motor running at full power

- What parts - hoses, rubber fittings/seals - can NOT be purchased seperately or at all?

You'll have to look around at current supplier lists. I do know they are NOT all available, so be very careful remoing them even if they look dodgy. They may have to go back as they are.

- Is it important to replace rivets with rivets and screws with screws?

That's down to personal preference, i.e. if you want it to look original. Just be careful that you don't put a self tapping screw through a panel and straight into the matrix

- What to look for in the hole and rubber seal UNDER the unit/on the body?

Just a couple of grates :?:

- Can I lose the damping material under and behind the heater unit? (Unwanted water storage)

Do you like extra noise?

- How are chances of replacing the lower windshield seal - or maybe even all windshield seals!?!?!?!? - now I´ve come so far?

The lower one can be the main cause of rot around the heater area, so change that one if there is a single crack in it.

- Has someone opened (AND CLOSED!) the linkage that is "riveted" directly to the axis of the flaps? I mean the three linkages coming from the heater levers in the interior where they are attached to the flaps with a toothed axis.

Nope :)

- Is the cooler/radiator available new? (EDIT: It is called heater matrix, as I found out...)

Don't know

Hi Stefan,

I seem to remember someone on here (possibly Mike Parkes?) fitting one of these and being pleased with it:

http://www.demisterman.co.uk/Rover/Rover P6 Heater matrix.php

Quattro's comments seconded.

Only to add: when you renew the foam on the heater flaps, don't take it right to the edges as the flaps won't then close and seal off the airflow completely.

There's a fair bit of detail in sowen's muscle car thread on refurbing the heater about 1/2 way down this page:

http://www.classicroverforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=21&t=5288&hilit=heater&start=240

Good luck with the job!

Hi guys!

@ John:
Same with me!
I found Pilkies thread by coincident, that just might be the one you have in mind:
viewtopic.php?f=7&t=12263#p99330

Also one on another forum (streetmachine?) by "sowen" that makes me  with shame for its thoroughness... .

@ Richard:
DANKE SEHR - VERY much what I needed!!
I will investigate further.
(I hate the "very careful"-part, though. The big rubber seal that goes to the bulk head IS dodgy... ).

@vaultsman:
You came in just the minute I wrote - THANK YOU VERY MUCH!
I think I can find some more clues from here.
(I found the demister page and offer yesterday - pleased to hear that it seems to be genuine!!)

Did I read somewhere (sowen!?!?) that the box was spot-welded in the factory??

- Can I lose the damping material under and behind the heater unit? (Unwanted water storage)

Do you like extra noise?

Wouldn't modern Butyl damping be better and not hold water? It'll almost certainly out-perform the original material as well.

transexl,
Pilkie's thread is good, but the one I am thinking of ran to a few pages and had loads of pictures along the way to detail the text and guide the reader along. Just the sort of thing I'd need.....

Thank you guys!!!

(By the way, as we are merrily searching for and collecting threads here - again:
What happened to the "How-To-Do-It"-section- idea?
I can´t seem to find the right thread right now... )
