Hello - just joined with an unusual project.

Tested 3 of the engines today ---oh dear, all need a strip down and careful rebuild. Anyone can tell me good oil lbs at cranking speed - not running speed - am getting 20psi from one engine, the others are lower.
 
rover v8s are notorious for low oil pressure when warm idling. somebody who has an oil pressure gauge will confirm but i think 15-20 psi is pretty common at tickover. If it doesnt sound noisy it'd probably be ok, but depends what you're creating! If you want perfection and not make do and mend you'll want to strip them down i guess!

Big rad from a tractor or JCB etc and inline electric water pumps if possible to get rid of extra pulleys on the front engines.

Sorry, just lost you the post about 3 and 4 inch pipe machined to fit inside each other with a big bolt to couple and uncouple. It appeared on both pages, so I assumed it was a double post and deleted one of them. Now there are none. Grrr...

Anyway. Going back to deciding how good your engines are. At 600rpm hot idle it is quite common for a Rover V8 to have as little as 5 psi oil pressure and still have a long life ahead of it. We'd all prefer them to be nearer 30 psi though. A better guide to engine condition is the state of the valve gear. If clean and simply discoloured then engine is in good condition. If you can barely see the valve springs for the carbon build up, then it needs a rebuild!

Well, I have just ordered all the stuff for major rebuilds, bearings, cams, followers, chain and spockets, etc.

I am short of 2 standard cams, Realsteel only have 1 left, and also need torque converter seal. Any ideas ??

http://www.aluminumv8.com have Rover and Buick 215 parts on the shelf if you don't mind ordering ex-USA
If you are going to replace cams then you will want to replace with new hydraulic followers as a set ( D and D have good prices for these )

You're welcome; a fun project! Visited Disneyworld a few years back with kids and made it to a car show in Daytona Beach, Florida is a great place and I would use any excuse to go back there
D&D aren't the best at replying to emails but are good on the 'phone, they have quite a bit more on the shelf than their website suggests
I bought nearly everything I needed to rebuild a 3.9 Discovery engine into a 5.0litre stroker motor from D&D and their prices and service were excellent

Sorry, should have said in Florida for Xmas, actually going on the 13th. Got plenty of time as we come back Jan 9th. Normally go for a month at Xmas for a bit of heat and do work on my house there. Bought a doer upper, ( when the prices were high - 2006 - bummer !! ) Most of the big jobs are done now, so smaller stuff, bathroom and kitchen revamp, etc.

Last year, my friend and I worked everyday for 5 weeks putting on a new roof, .... yes, even Xmas day, so Xmas dinner was 2 cheese sandwiches each and keep working, was bluudy hot too.

104 at 9 in the morning - just freak weather.

Yes, its that crazy time of life again, now starting to assemble the 3 V8's to make a V24. Chassis away being blasted and coated, engines on the operating table, its all going OK so far. Made a few changes along the way, but its all happening. 10.5 litre, 3 speed auto and 19" artillery wheels, haha, you only live once.
