Help please!!

Hi All,

Took the P6 to work today as normal. The weather here has been very hot (35-40deg) lately but the car has been coping well.

Parked up at work and did my 12 hour shift. When I came to head home the car refused to start. The motor turned freely, plenty of fuel, the points looked OK, so nothing out of the ordinary. But she would not fire up.

The only thing that appeared different was a strange "sucking" noise from under the bonnet when turning her over but I couldn't pin down where it was originating. The light eventually faded so I took a taxi home and will have another look tomorrow.

Any suggestions on why the car would behave perfectly in the morning and not start 12 hours later? ?

Check for a spark at the plugs .I'm wondering if the sucking noise is an air leak , maybe the vacuum pipe for the servo ?

My ten cents; I'd be checking the fuel pump.

You mention the sucking noise and the extreme heat.

It sounds like the pump is sucking on air.

Hope you get it sorted soon.

Hi RT,

Luke down in Melbourne had the same problem. Engine would start fine then would not start the next time. Turned out to be the little nylon piece within the distributor that the dwell adjustment screw attaches to. The piece had failed and the points gap was incorrect.

You won't hear the mechanical fuel pump sucking air. Air leaks around the inlet manifold are not impossible, but I don't imagine that would prevent the engine from starting.

Hi All,

Thanks as usual for the prompt replies. Very much appreciated.

The fluffy toy goes to.............. Ron!!!!!!

Spot on with your suggestion Ron. It was indeed the nylon nut that the dweel adjuster goes into. The thread had stripped and the screw would not bite meaning the points were completely closed.

A quick trip to the engineering workshop at work and I was supplied with a nice flat "speed washer" which did the trick perfectly. The engineer then said that he would make me a new unit out of billet at a later date..... Awesome!!!! :D :D :D A good result all round.

Thanks again Ron :D

Hi RT,

I am happy that my memory served me well, and excellent that your Rover is up and running again :D

What was the sucking noise ?

Not sure Dave. Obviously not connected to the problem but will require further investigation. One of the hoses on the charcoal canister was loose, maybe the cause but will wait and see.

That reminds me of a cartoon I once saw where the woman takes her car into the repair shop
with a weird knocking noise and the (stereotypically) shady looking mechanic has the bonnet open.

She says; "What's that knocking noise?"
Mechanic thinks; " Sounds like opportunity to me!!"
