Thanks Pete for putting this on forum weve had a few replies thanks to everyone thats replied its been a great help. The gearbox is off the engine but it gets stuck on the bulkhead,The bulge were the starter motor goes it cant get to the top ,something near the aliminium plate is getting stuck in the gearbox tunnel ,our moby number is 07862215222 if any one wants to phone, thanks again Timbo in Doncaster

I just removed a autobox from a V8 - if thats what your doing here is what I did:
engine bay - remove top cowl from radiator, radiator breather hose, servo hose, air filter, throttle linkage and down shift cable.
Under the car. front half of exhaust, propshaft, support the rear of the gearbox on a jack and remove the rear mount complete with bracket. lower the box - keep an eye on the engine/fan my engine rocker covers met the bulkhead before any strain on hoses etc.
remove gear linkage bracket from gearbox ( at the top of the bell housing) remove filler tube, remove oil cooler hoses. remove inhibitor/reverse light switch wiring.
disconnect gear shift ball joints
box now came out with no trouble at all.
hope helps

TO EVERYONE WHO OFFERED ADVICE ,THANKS,AND GUESS WHAT.GEARBOX IS OFF.UNFORTUNATELY I HAD TO RAISE ENGINE ,TAKE BONNET OFF .BUT GOT THERE IN THE END
NOW TO PUT NEW ONE IN!!!!!!!

Tim,

Good to hear you got sorted.

Did you find out why it wouldn't come out or did it just come away when you lifted the engine?

Colin

:D HI COLIN IT CAME OFF WHEN I REMOVED ENGINE.ALIMINIUM PLATE WHICH HOUSES THE GEAR SELECTOR WAS CATCHING ON THE BRACKETS IN THE GEAR BOX TUNNEL.

I haven't had the pleasure(?) of removing a manual from behind a V8, left that to the experts when they did my 5spd conversion, but have removed several from behind the 4 cylinder.

The trick I found was to put a jack under the rear of the sump and remove the vertical tie rod at the front of the engine. Then having removed the radiator (otherwise it could get messy...), starter, throttle linkage, speedo cable etc and broken the exhaust, just undo the gearbox mounts and let the engine slowly tilt back on the mounts, which with a little juggling allows the 'box to come off relatively easily without having to remove the whole engine. Going back on is the same, but you may need to jack the front of the engine slightly to get the same angle.

:D HI ALL NEW GEARBOX IS IN,UNFORTUNATELY THE ONE I,D BOUGHT FROM IANP6MAN WAS DIFFERENT ,THE ONE IN IT WAS WRONG,MAYBE THE REASON WHY IT WOULDNT COME OUT!!!A FEW SUGGESTIONS FROM IAN ,A LOT OF GENTLE !!!PERSUATION FROM ME AND ITS IN AT LAST.MOT THIS WEEKEND AND HOPEFULLY SHE,LL BE BACK ON THE OPEN ROAD WHERE SHE BELONGS ,TIMBO
