Hibernation

Hi,

I was wondering if I should use gas and motor oil additives (against corrosion) during the next 4 months while my P6 is hibernation.
And: is it advised to change oil and filter before heading to the deep sleep.

Thanks Thomas

Hello Thomas,

What have you normally done in the past or is this your first approaching Winter of P6 ownership?

Manufacturers normally resist the addition of additives into engine oils, fuel maybe less so. Regardless of whether you were to change the oil before you would certainly want to change it before using the Rover come Spring.

Might be a good idea to make contact with a local Land / Range Rover service centre and possibly some well established garages and ask for their opinions. In that way you can make an informed decision.

Ron.

Hi Ron,

it's my 2nd winter. Last year I changed oil plus filter and added an additive to fuel and motor oil. i'm just not sure if it's really necessary to do all of it. After all it costs time and money. On the other hand I don't want to harm the old engine.

Cheers Thomas

Make sure the fuel tank is full to the brim. That way there is no space for condensation to form in the tank. An oil changeis certainly a good idea - so as to ensure that there are no combustion acids left absorbed in the oil. Otherwise I'd leave well alone. Oh, and make sure the antifreeze is an aluminium freindly one. It has been known for the water pump outlet to dissolve over a winter....

Change the oil, fill the tank to the brim and run it with the fuel pipe clamped or blocked off until the carbs run dry to prevent the fuel in the float bowl evaporating and leaving sludge or varnish and you should be OK.

@chris never heard of that … what's to do in spring to get fuel to the carbs or does it flow automagically.

I've got an electrickety pump, so I turn the key, wait till the sound of the pump slows down and, voila, it goes.

Do be careful with the antifreeze, though. My new pump went missing over a year in storage thanks to the wrong stuff.
