Hidden K and N filters

Has anyone ever successfully converted to K&N filters on a standard 3.5 engine but hidden them inside the original air cleaner assembly? If so how easy/hard was it and what model of K&N did you go for? Also with regard to carb needles in a K&N conversion would you always go for a richer needle or see what result you get with the standard needles. My August 71 car has BAK needles fitted now with the standard paper filters. Thanks in advance for any useful info.

There's a few on here that have done it - rockdemon and chrisyork know the ins and outs of it - but use the search function and you'll find a couple of threads discussing it.

Have (and am still!) trying to find something on it with the search function but trouble is type in filter and you get 600+ threads to search through - oil, fuel and air combined. Typing K and N doesnt seem to help much either. Will stick at it!

Thanks ever so much Jim and Chris - everything I wanted to know - I was sure someone would have done it before. I'm even a Pitstop customer of old myself - can see a visit in the summer to Ralph coming on! :D Just would like to make sure I go for the right needles - Chris I guess your S1 was on KO needles as standard but mine is an early S2 with BAK's fitted - any thoughts or do you reckon that's more a suck it and see when on the rolling road?

Rockdemon can calculate the needles accurately with his computer program which will get it pretty near and ready for fine tuning on the rolling road.

Hi. To get the approx needles I need a few details on your setup! 1st p6 heads or sd1. Standard cam? Engine driven or electric fan? Standard or souped up exhaust. Didn't have time to find chris' thread at work earlier!

Rich.

Hi Rich,
As far as I know the car is completely standard - original P6 heads (10.5:1), standard camshaft, engine driven fan and standard exhaust.
Cheers,
Simon

actually doesnt matter - both come out as BCA as closest followed by BCG.

You'll need to adjust your timing too once thy're installed.

Rich.

Blimey, that's some PC programme! It is fitted with Lumenition Optronic but if in your opinion that wouldn't affect it either way then no worries. I would have a rolling road tune-up done at the point of fitting new filters/needles and have the timing done properly at the same time. Thanks for the info, have you used the 'needle finder' yourself with good results?

yeah - worked great for me and agrees pretty much with Chris' rolling road result too i believe. It obviously is just a simulation but certainly pretty good as a starting point...

Then again, having said that.....changing the filters and needles is not beyond the home mechanic but where would you begin on working out adjusted ignition timing?
I guess just keep setting the timing at different degrees one by one until you get a result where there is no pinking under load on wide throttle openings? Each modified car would be different so previous experience of others would not necessarily be an advantage here.

simply run the engine with the dizzy bolt loosened. Move the dizzy to the point of highest revs. Tighten the bolt. If it pinks when driven then retard it a little.
