hey all been trying to find out how to convert my 1969 mk 1 v8 head lights because mine are not good at all got to drive round with all light all the time how much work does it take to do it

I bought a set of four 5 3/4 halogen headlights and fitted them as normal. As far as I know they should come complete with the same lamp fitting on the back so are a straight swap. It may be worth fitting relays to the lights to reduce the electrical load on your wiring loom if you have not already tried that.

I got some lamps from a scrap yard.

They came out of one of those xj40 jags obviously not the square lamp type. I only paid £15 and the bulbs were good so I think that it was a bargain.

There is plenty kits available especially for the Triumph Stag etc.

I never altered the wiring but would recommend that you add a relay, I melted a fuse box when I had the standard lamp.

Can anyone advise on how best to fit a relay for the dipped headlamps.

I have heard of folks taking a supply from the alternator output but favour taping into the supply to the main light switch which is fed from the ammeter shunt.....

Personally I would take the electrical feed from the battery cable where it sits on the junction post in the drivers footwell. You connect the battery feed to terminal 30 and the light to terminal 87. Terminals 85 and 86 operate the coil to activate the relay, one is attached to the switch (usually the old light power feed) and the other to earth.

I would fit the relay on the end of the wiring loom behind the headlamps, taking a live feed from the alternator with an inline fuse.

Very simple way to do it and saves running ugly wired over the engine bay and ease of access to the components and option to return to standard.

Hello Gareth,
if you read my articles in the P6 NEWs (feb 2002 page 7 - tells of my fitting the later model 75 watt inner lamps in place of the original 37½ watt as I was assured that the standard wiring was perfectly suitable to upgrade to twice the wattage on the main beam lamps by Steve Hopkins the club technical advisor on electrical problems) then in October 2003 pages 12 & 13 describes my fitting of the Lucas Halogen headlamps (the ones with HALOGEN written across the front that a lot of Triumph Stag owners fit) and the wiring mods required to have both lamps on with main beam setting using a changeover relay - The Rover inners have two filaments for dip / main whereas the Lucas lamps have single filaments which work fine with the Stag but need a modification on the Rovers.
The P6 NEWS of December 2002 page 19 shows a small correction to my October article.
Headlight conversions using standard halogen bulbs of 55 watts do not require any modifications to the standard wiring, assuming of course that the wiring is in good order - The lamp glasses will get a lot hotter than lamps using tungsten bulbs but they do not draw any more power.
I hope this helps - I know that your Dad, or Alan Pinder, will have these magazines.
I bought used Lucas HALOGEN lamps from a club member for a very reasonable fee - You can still buy them new from Rover / triumph stockists such as Rimmer Bros. but they are very expensive, or you may be lucky to pick some up on e-bay, as I have also done!
Regards, John

hi john
yea i might have the book as well there are a set of headlight on ebay which i am thinking of getting and putting it on mth just the light on mine are useless so that why i have been looking at these light so i can just replace the bulb when the light does on it. when i had my 2200sc the light were great on that had no problems at all. i also got the later alternator on mine so i would of thought that would help also

Some time ago one of the main beam single filament headlights on my 3500s was discoloured and I decided to replace it. I went to one of the major parts suppliers and found a replacement at a reasonable cost. It was made in China and when I examined the carton it said: "For swimming pool and off-road use only." When I raised this I was told that " they are all like this today".
