Importing a Classic Car to the UK

I thought I'd just recount my efforts to register my Alfa Mid-life crisis! here in the UK as it is a South African import & I 've noticed the odd SA P6 for sale recently.

The Gov.uk guidance implies a classic that would be a historic vehicle in this country can be imported & directly registered as such, although most advice seems to suggest a UK MOT is needed, then registration as a PLG, then change to a Historic.

When I originally completed the Alfa application & submitted it, I got a letter back from the DVLA stating what the 'advice' had said. There were other queries at the time, so I phoned DVLA & they confirmed what I had to do.

I therefore worked on getting an MOT (which I do on my classics in any event) & resubmitted the paperwork. A V5 with registration number came back almost straight away, with a manual note on it saying that an MOT was not required, nor was registration as PLG! The V5 is already showing historic status & the DVLA have refunded my 6 months' RFL

As is sometimes the case with certain agencies, one person says one thing & another something else, so I'm not sure which is correct, although I suspect the latter. Does anyone else have any experience of this?

I did have the 'NOVA' letter from the start.

Someone i know imported a 1940's Buick fromt the States. He filled in the paperwork, sent it off. It had no MOT, and no insurance, the V5C came back, registered as Historic, and with a years free road tax.

I registered a Mk2 Jag. The guy who imported it had problems due to the vin number being wrong on the import paper work.

I did insure it on the vin but didnt MOT it as exempt. Will takes years to get it roadworthy. That seemed to be an ask by the dvla.

Was quite pain free, just took weeks. I did end up with a direct contact who let me chose a few options for the model name.

As the man says, now you have the v5 thats all that matters.
