Hi all.
I have decided to buy myself an inspection camera, borescope, for my Xmas prezzie from me to myself! :)
Best gift I get is the one I get for me!
My questions to you lot are???
Have you got one?
Ever had one?
Ever used one?
If so what type?
What type would you buy if you wanted one?
My criteria are;
Has to be under £200,probably closer to £100 if poss!,"On offer"
10mm max camera head size, the smaller the better.
At least 1m length cable.
Must have a SD card for picture/video capture,or at least internal storage to download to a PC!!
Dont want to have to use it with a laptop,so has to have a built in,or detachable screen!
Waterproof camera head.
Selection of tool attachments.
Been having a google about and look to see whats what, but some dont give full spec!
Your thoughts appreciated.

I've had one with a few years and find it excellent. Mine is a snake vision, and from memory cost about £100 at the time. I originally bought it to diagnose a problem with the clutch on the Jag, but have used it for every thing from looking inside chimney flues, inside sills, gearboxes, finding electrical cables in walls and ceilings etc. I gave it to a mechanic for a day and he bought one, and have given it to other trades on site who were similarly impressed. I think mine is 10mm in diameter and has a 1m lead. It has a jack socket on it for connecting it to a larger screen. Well worth the money!! This one http://www.amazon.co.uk/VISION-ENDOSCOP ... B003WVEM12 seems to be an updated version of mine with recording capability.

Dave

I have a cheap USB one was about £10.

It is ok but need lots of light, when it is in a really dark hole the LED lamps on it aren't enough.

I will get some use from it but not as good as the puka borescopes.

I was quite lucky and work bought me one as my job requires it, but it was horrifically expensive. It's a Snap-On one and has two different cameras, one small one and one larger. You can attach different fittings to the end of it too if you desire, it has the ability to record onto a little memory card or you can plug it straight into a monitor. There is also a option for a wireless video connection, all this is well and good but the sticker on the bottom still says "made in China" so I reckon if you look around you can find the same thing for a lot cheaper without the posh Snap-On box and lifetime warranty

at my current work we have one very similar to the one pictured above, quite frankly its useless from my point of view i want to be able to look at the valves etc, whereas the one we have the camera will only point downwards you can only really see the piston crown, you certainly cant access the condition of the bores for scoring etc. however with that in mind if your only interested in prostate exams  and being able to see if the piston to valve clearance has deminished rapidly then its fine.

my old job used to have a proper olympus one (we are talking >£2k) which was amazing, you had the ability to move the viewing angle around 360 degrees as well as to move the mirror up and down and focus, it wasnt a recording scope however we had an adapter to attach a camera system to record images. it was truely brilliant for accessing bore condition, but then again when your looking at laser honing and nicasil liners etc you need the resolution to see any break down in surface condition.

personally i dont use the one at my current work for anything but a last resort, at which point my other tests (cylinder leakdown etc) have already told me that there is serious damage (usually bent valves from the driver using the engine to slow down over the brakes! - fecking pushrod engines!) and i already know that the cylinder head is going to have to come off. whereas if the scope we had was of better quality it might be one of my regular checks
