Insurance Renewal Requirements

Insurance for P6

I have just been requested by the Insurance company that covers my P6 to supply at least 6 photographs of the vehicle, namely:
Front and rear showing number plate (bit difficult to do otherwise unless one removes them!)
Off and near side full length
Engine compartment
Interior
Any non standard fitments

After shopping around at last renewal time, I did change Insurance companys so was expecting to supply a couple of pics, and mileage certificates etc, but I am wondering if other members have experienced a “tightening” of classic car Insurance requirements ?.

No doubt this is due to fraudulent claims – yet another sign of the times ? What are members experiences ?

Hi Mike, when I took out cover for my P6 earlier this year I too was asked to provide 6 photographs (same shots as yours), which I did eventually get around to sending after I'd tarted the car up a bit! When I had my Cortina before that I was also asked for 6 photos, but I never ever got around to sending those off! The Rover ones I just uploaded from a digital camera and emailed them so it saved me the trouble of printing and posting. Will.

When my classic car multi car policy was due,I had the normal, send 6 pics of each car request + copy of the MOT for the mileage.
I sent them the link to my photobucket album with all the resto pics in for the TR6 and the Rover P6. They wanted to know of any modifications,I said the only thing was the tyres were slightly larger than std,but that is because original spec ones were not available unless I fitted van tyres!! Also helps with road holding in the wet,so are a safety item as well!!!
They were impressed and reccomended that, considering the work that had gone into it, I increased the agreed value on the TR6,for a minimal extra fee,as they felt it was currently undervalued.
Both cars fully comp,no mileage limit,EU cover and EU breakdown cover, agreed value, "£16k total",no requirement to have both cars garaged, extra named driver + other std stuff = £135 pa!!
"Footman James" ask for a classic car multi car policy!!!
IIRC!!!! They allow up to 5 cars on one policy.

I've used Footman James before & found their cover to be very good & their prices very reasonable, I got the usual send pics of the car & the garage it lives in & when I forgot to send them they simply said you are still covered but your agreed value may not stand in the event of a claim.

Regards Colin

It's been a few years since I actually insured a classic but I was asked for photos at least 10 years ago.

Interesting thing is, how do they know when the photo's were taken ? Car could be a shed by now !

Especially with a p6 where it can look externally very nice, but be totally rotten underneath. Maybe they just want you to prove that the car actually exists.

Mine wanted a report filled out for all the modifications, every single nut and bolt, plus the qualifications of the person who carried them out.

This was after they had taken the money and issued the cover.

It cost me £300.00 for fully comp and restricted to 5,000 miles.

This is ok for me this year but I will take a bit more time looking around for next year.

No photos though?

Thanks for that info Dave, I have used Footman James a few years ago and did get a quote from them this time and had they offered multi Classic car cover to me I would probably have agreed to put both of mine on the one policy, at present they are with different companies and more than likely costing me more to insure. Good idea re. photobucket linking.

I agree Richard, looks can be very deceptive, and photos without a digital date mark are open to doubt.
Its been years since I had a Morgan, but back in the 70`s the Club had accredited valuers who would physically inspect the car, give a written valuation, which was accepted by the Clubs` nominated Insurance company and usually resulted in a favourable premium cost in comparison to one without.(Morgan’s ash body frame was very susceptible to rot and/or other deterioration in cars more than 10 years old) but usually one or two colour pictures was sufficient in those more trusting days.

There is less of that about now so we have to accept the inevitable.

It was only when I found out about the multicar policy they do from another club member, that I asked FJ about their multi car policy!!
I was then offered a deal that saved me about £100pa for my pair, and the rover is my daily driver.
For some silly reason, some companies dont like you using your classics as daily drivers! :?
They say you must have a " normal " car or the use of one!!!
I had to argue that 2 miles to work wasnt commuting!! And I do more mileage not going to work!
And as I only do a low annual mileage anyway, whats to stop me using, MY!! car whenever and for whatever I want to ??? To go to work, shopping, days out, just go for a drive!!!!
A yearly 5000 miles is 5000 miles however you do it!
You really do have to stipulate what you want out of the policy, and get it written into the policy!! And check the small print for any get outs they may have!!!

To be fair to the insurers (what am I saying... ), 5000 miles in rush hour traffic must be higher risk than 5000 miles of sunday afternoon trips to shows.
As you say, make sure you know what you are and aren't covered for, and if you do have a bump whilst commuting when you don't have commuting cover for gods sake tell them you were going to a mid week early morning show

" for gods sake tell them you were going to a mid week early morning show "

Insurance investigators aren't that gullible , I'm afraid .If there wasn't a mid week show in the vicinity ,you'd end up in big trouble

If you need to use it for commuting , get the cover first

That was a joke by the way, can't say I've ever seen a mid week early morning show !!

You could just say that you were going shopping, or driving around just for fun.

Mine is actually insured for cummuting to work, but not for any other work use.

I insure my 3500S with Boncaster on limited mileage (3000) and have added business use in case my 'other car' is off the road There was no increase in premium (which is about £100 pa). I suppose if I was a rep or similar, it might have been a different story.
