intermittent misfire 65 2000

Just collected my dads car for my annual pilgrimage to Goodwood and he advised it has developed an odd misfire. I drove 70 miles in it on A1 A14 and runs like a swiss watch but apperently when he tries to pick it up off a long coast into say a roundabout it stutters and misses before picking up again.

Anyone had this themselves or anythoughts to what might be the cause?

Its a good starter and it feels like fuel yet shouldn't be starvation as it runs strongly at indicated 80mph on the motorway, all the ignition system is new ish so I am at a loss as to what it may be unless its an intermittent dashpot sticking problem??

Any suggestions greatfully received

Thanks Phil, will have a look at that, have cleaned carb and going to see if I can replicate the fault this evening, fingers crossed I can't!! Last year he lent it to me with a similar fault and it expired in the single lane bit of the A3 at Hindhead when the LT wire in the dizzy broke, so keen to have a trouble free outing this time.

It could be a similar fault now, as the run up the the roundabout (or whatever) on the overrun will be giving maximum vacuum advance, and that movement of the baseplate could be causing one of the lt wires to move and either breakdown internally, or short to earth.

it was actually the condensor, swapped that and problem vanished. Not that it really help as dynamo failed on way into goodwood on second day.......

There are a lot of dodgy ones around at the mo. I went through 3 (and a LT connector as it happens) in 3 months before finally giving up and getting and electronic ignition kit from SimonBBC. Best £30 I've ever spent! If trouble persists, you really should at least consider it!

Hope it's all sorted though!

Thanks Michael, the dodgy one wasnt old and it would run perfectly 'sometimes' and then suddenly misbehave. I now have 2 spare ones in glove box, just waiting on the recon dynamo now but be mobile again by the weekend. There was a similar problem with rotor arms a while ago I think....

Evening gents, just signed up and already asking questions! I have a '68 2000 SC and have had exactly the same problem as reported here - a misfire in 1st and 2nd but running fine in 3rd and top. I thought it might be a fuel problem but reading this thread I suspect it's the condensor. I had an intermittent misfire on another car (early MGB) and eventually resorted to fitting an external condensor on the inner wing, but if electronic ignition will solve it where can I buy the kit?

Swapped to the SimonBBC unit this weekend as recommended above by Michael and the Rover revs sweetly through the gears now with no misfire so hopefully problem sorted!
