Oh yeah, boy racer rally pins here we come

every time i have the bonnet open i have to push the catch shut with a screwdriver. It's on my long list of to dos...

Ouch, that is nasty. Hope you get it sorted cheaply.
I had it happen a few times on my Mini back when I was younger and more resistant to frights like that.
Today, I think it would prove that adrenaline is brown.

We've had a couple of these bonnet accidents on the forum recently, I think everybody needs to get out and inspect the bonnet catches asap, I know I've seen a few with the secondary catch bent in such a way as it would do very little.

Maybe this is why the SD1 had the forward hinging bonnet

I wonder if their was a way to put our own secondary catch on as well. some form of clip which is unclipped and re-clipped when bonnet release is pulled. mmmmmmmm

Happened to me on a Fiat 127 once - and that did have a forward hinged bonnet! The shoelace I had holding the bonnet down came undone and the wind blew the bonnet right over, smashing the headlights and grill. It was parked at the time.
Also happened on my Land Rover SIII when the catch unscrewed itself. The bonnet opened, lifted off its hinges and dragged along held by the support mechanism.

Shouldn't be necessary if all is working well :)

Unless you like belt and two pair of braces

Wow that looked frightening.

So glad no one was hurt.

It's a shame as its a beautiful car, but metal can be fixed and returned to rights the other scenario doesn't bear thinking of.

As for the sills thats one I am dreading as the evil rustreaper is bound to visit me too at some point, hopefully not too soon!

Ouch! My sympathies, hope you get that sorted out, that's a very nice motor you've got there.

When i was young and i rode round in my dads rovers p6 i remember our series 1 rover did the same the catch just failed and up came the bonnet, when i drive rosie i always have a quick look at the bonnet just in case , i repalced the spring with a new one and its realy made it feel much better.i have tried to think of a way to fit a second clamp or bonnet pins as they would nt look out of palce on rosie.
your car is a lovely thing and im sorry to see that happen i hope it works out in the end .i had a vw van do it to me and its very frightening i was in the 3rd lane over taking 2 lorries at the time doing 90 mph.
keep us all posted

Sorry to hear the bad news Adam. I can sympathize for you though, I have a friend who had that happen to their Austin Healey 3000, I know someone who had the number plate panel fall off their Triumph TR4 - and it got run over. That was a fairly freshly restored car; and just last friday 'House of Birch' had some bad luck - Dad's P6, which was at Rugeley, has been bashed into by a van. So that's got to be sorted soon.
