Jumping out of first gear.

I'm looking to buy my first P6. I've seen a couple advertised and both state that the manual gearbox occasionally jumps out of first gear. Not knowing too much about p6's I'm more than willing to take advice from those that know. is this a common problem, and is it an easy fix/repair to cure this or is it a early indication of big expenditure looming.

Thanks in advance.

The 4 speed gearboxs are a bit on the weak side and tend to wear out quickly especially if abused.

As I understand it there aren't many spares available for the 4 spd box and so even if a rebuild is required it may not be possible. (I could stand corrected on this)

I know you said in another thread that you weren't planning to get involved in working on the car so I'd budget for about £500 to get another gearbox and get it fitted by a garage.

I would say if it's going to be a problem keep looking till you find a better car.

I had to rebuild the gearbox on my 2000 after I went mad on boosting horsepower, (see thread in 4 cylinder section). I found a group here in Australia called the old gearbox company and they were able to produce a new set of gears and baulk rings. NOT CHEAP!! Cost around $2000 Aust for the work but on the plus side the box is nearly unburstable now.
Good second hand gearboxs are out there, you just have to keep looking, the last one I picked up on ebay for $2! :D
Cheers
