Jumping out of gear (auto)

Hi all,
I took Hermy in for her MOT today, everything was fine and she passed :D , problems started on the way home, first of all i couldn't find reverse, then i had a problem finding drive,
Eventually she went into gear and i started to drive home and i noticed the gear lever felt "different", i couldn't feel the gear selector selecting gears (if that makes sense),
About 4 miles from home things started to get worse and i had to physically hold the selector in place otherwise drive was lost,

Another thing i noticed was that she wouldn't change into 2nd and top without jumping into Neutral first

I managed to get her home and up on the ramps and can find nothing out of place except the gearbox rear mount suspension spring,i'm assuming that this was displaced when the gearbox was going between Drive and Neutral, apart from the spring all the linkages are secure and adjusted correctly,

Quite frankly, i'm at a loss,i'm just hoping that it's not a major problem,

Any ideas

Hello Hermione,

The gear lever for both the 35 and 65 pivot within a nylon ball cup, and when this fails the lever will become very loose and can drop down somewhat. If you position the lever into drive, is there movement up and down? Failure here can also impact on gear selection.

Ron.

If the lever (as suggested above) is OK then check that the compensator mounted on the top of the bellhousing isn't loose/adrift or the slider is moving freely. It certainly sounds more like a linkage fault than something internal from what you've described so far.

Thanks for your input fellas, i have now found what the problem is,although it didn't become clear until i'd removed the middle exhaust section,
It appears that all 5 of the bolts that hold the gearbox to the bell housing are missing , and judging by the amount of oil on the underside of the car i'd say these bolts have been missing for a while

My main concern is that the front oil pump drive tangs on the torque converter aren't damaged

Isn't it something that the MOT tester should have spotted?

In all fairness to the tester these bolts aren't that easy to see,to get at them you need to remove the rear gearbox mount and lower the back of the box down,

I've now removed the box and found that there are 6 bolts,i'd mistaken a sheared bolt for a dowel,....and it gets better, two bolts have sheared flush in the bell housing and the topmost bolt has stripped the threads, looks like i might be looking for a 4 pot auto bell housing,.....

I've just had another thought, what are the chances of the flexplate failing next

Hello Kev,

Have you had the transmission overhauled since owning the car? If so, I dare say that who ever did it failed to replace the bolts...

Ron.

Hi Ron,
No, the transmission has never been touched (apart from an oil change when i bought her 6 years ago),
In fact, the previous owner had her from new (retirement present) and the only major work done was the usual "rotten sill syndrome", she was regulaly serviced up to 30k,then left in a lock-up for 14 years.

I have now managed to get the sheared bolts out and retapped the stripped thread, the box is back in and will finish putting her back together tomorrow (weather permitting) :D

Kev,...

ps, check out the flickr link in my sig and see what standing in a lock-up for 14 years can do

Hello Kev,

As the bolts were missing, and the transmission has never been overhauled, who would have removed them? They would not have come undone by themselves.

Glad to hear that you have sorted it all out... :D

Gee, the tin worms must have been hungry....

Ron.

I've had that happen on a V8 with a 35 box, but not a 2000/2200. Mine came in with harsh engagement of DRIVE and REVERSE and the box was spinning round until it hit something on the tunnel which stopped it with a clonk. I fitted 6 replacement bolts and it was fine, but if you have snapped bolts you either take a chance on fitting as many as you can, or remove the box to do it all properly. I doubt that being loose will have affected the drive to the front pump, as for the driveplate, only time will tell.

Incidentally I got all the bolts back in without dropping the back of the box or the exhaust, but in that case all the threads were OK.
