hi i keep loosing power, what keeps happening is there is no power till 2000rpm its like a snail and its the same through the auto box on the same revs.
yesterday when i looked at the carbs 1 was staying closed but i cleaned it up and got it going the car ran fine again after that but last night went to go out again and she was loosing power again i checked the carb and that was doing what it should do.
it normally starts playing up when i put my foot down on a long straight
the air box also does not have much suction not like normal
can anyone help
thanks tom

do you have a lot of oily smoke coming from the crank case breather into the air filter housing? Is the inside of the air filter housing fairly dry of oil?

carb or electrics then...

Need to go through one thing at a time - check the timing, check the spark plugs. Do you have electronic ignition, if not change points/condensor - coil can play up like this too.

When everything electrical looks ok then move onto checking fuel ( blocked filter could cause power loss on acceleration and make sure theres no leak from the fuel pump)

Then look at the carb jet - check theres no grit in there. Put some carb cleaner through there...

That's how i'd approach it anyhow :)

hi i cleaned the fuel filter out and gave the carbs a nother good old clean seems to be ok now touch wood but i have done it b4 and it normaly happens after a few days but ill have to wate and see
could the ht leads affect it?
thanks for your advice its all a learning curve for me

if cleaning the carbs fixes it then that implies that rubbish is getting into the carb from somewhere...

are they hif6 carbs? does it smell of fuel?
Mine play up now and then, ive diagnosed its the choke mechanism jamming on and overfuelling, probably due to an O ring breaking down.

When I first got Lucky he ran fine, but the performance was disappointing to put it mildly. Eventually he went for a rolling road tune up. On arrival, power at the rear wheels was 62 bhp, on leaving he had 112! Repairs as such, were pretty minimal, new plugs, decent Magnecor plug leads and an ignition amp, the rest was down to setting up. There is a guide on how to do this on here from me, but if you don't feel confident mechanically then I would thoroughly recommend the rolling road route. Basic cost was £180 plus repairs as required.

how can you tell the difference in the carbs ? and just latley i have started to smell fuel now and again

with the electrics i have changed the points, rotor arm and cap , ignition coil i still need to change the leads but all the plugs are clean

If you can smell fuel check for signs of overflow in the float chanbers of the carbs. If they are HS6 carbs they'll have a little chamber on the side and have a nut underneath for mixture. HIF carbs have the float chamber on the bottom with a screw for mixture.

On the HS6s you can see the fuel on top of the float chamber if the floar or valve are sticking....

Rich.
