Loan of specialist tools

I'm at the stage where I need to strip out the front suspension from my V8 project so I'm looking for a very short term loan of the correct tool for splitting the upper and lower ball joints on the swivel pillar.....plus the front spring compressors.

I could split the ball joints with a bit of brute force and the application of several methods that I've employed previously but they usually end up damaging the joint itself. That's not been a problem before as I've removed to replace. The ball joints on the V8 are okay so I'd like to remove them without damaging them. Likewise I could probably get the front springs out using one of the methods described on the forum, but I'd prefer to make life easy (and safe) for myself and use the proper tools.

I know there are some out there, but I also know that those who have them generally need to have them available for their own use. If anyone has both the tool for the ball joints and a set of front spring compressors that I can borrow for a weekend give me a shout please.

I'm happy to pay for postage costs

Thanks

Dave

Just a bump for this request. 58 views and nil response so far. My next option will be to contact Rover P6 Club members :D The Club must have some of these tools knocking around somewhere!

From what i understand the j pins are ok for the springs as long as they've not been altered or done another way ( and they do look like they'd slip pretty easily!)... i'd want to use the long studding method having seen both done!

Hi Dave, Somewhere I have a massive device that dad and I built to get the top joints off. I'm up at his this weekend so I'll have a scout round if you like, though if you'd rather a proper one then sadly not.

This is is: A bit brutal but it worked. I *might* still have it somewhere. ( I won't be offended if you don't want it! 8) )

Thanks guys

Rob, if it works that'll do for me. I've made a few of my own tools and they look just as brutal as that. I'm not precious about getting the official tool, just something that works in a similar fashion.

Rich when you say "as long as they've not been altered" do you mean the j pins or the springs?

the cups at the end of the springs. a common practice is to enlargen the holes and put studs with nuts on through the holes. once this has been done once the original method is going to be more dangerous at best...

This happened on a car I was helping with last week.
The driver side spring cup had been bodged with a longer bolt and nut which didn't line up correctly :x
A little worrying when the spring decided it wanted to become a v shape half compressed on the car still :!:
It came off eventually and nobody was hurt, by that time I was hiding around the corner

found it!

Need to find a suitable box and then weigh it, then will get it posted.

Excellent, thanks Rob. I've spent a few hours removing all the rear suspension components today just the diff at the rear and the front suspension to go :D

I'll pm you my address.
