mallory dizzy

i need to know who to believe here
i have a misfire which is worse uphill or overtaking
went to a auto elecrtrician who said it could be the fuel pump
spoke to the fuel pump supplier who said it was the ignition system!
he recommended new ht leads to start with with a mallory dizzy and other stuff.
surely it should work with the lumination thing on there?any advice?

A jump to a mallory is a major leap to cure a mis fire !

But it could be a weak spark at the route of the problem so yes I would try, plugs, leads, rotor and disi cap. (Assuming luminition rules out condensor and points ) It could be the coil breaking down and not producing a strong spark at higher revs and under load.

Lack of petrol would result in lack of power rather than a mis fire

I agree except that lack of fuel does produce a misfire immediately before everything dies! So ignition system first, then straight onto an electric pump if there's no improvement. See also some other recent posts where tank venting came into the equation as well!

Or you could treat this as an oppotunity to upgrade to the Mallaroy system even if it does not cure the fault, fuel and engine performance will be improved, if cash is not a problem then either way you end up with a smile on your face.

Strangely, my dual point mallory dizzy caused me problems. (or did it?)

When I first bought Sparky, he ran very lumpy, and it seemed that to get any sort of power, I had to floor it. So I had a good tickover and a good WOT but not too much in the middle. I took it down to RPI and he told me that the mallory was not the right dizzy to have with the spec of my engine and I would be better off with the contactless SD1 dizzy. Funnily enough he just happened to have a new batch of the SD1 dizzy in stock

Not bein an idiot, I was resistant to this but he said he would change it and if i didn't make a big difference, he would change it back, no charge. I drove it up the road and it did make a huge difference, not perfect but a whole lot better. Replacing the feed wire to the coil sorted the problem completely. I do still wonder if I had changed the wire first, whether the mallory would have performed better.

So, if I was looking to upgrade my igniton system I would fit the SD1 contactless dizzy and magnecor leads.

If I was looking for a misfire, I would check all of the existing connections for tightness and cleanliness (including wire from fuse box or tacho to coil), voltage at the coil, rotor arm and inside of dizzzy for any sign of tracking, timing, action of vacuum advance unit, vacuum pipe, point gap and condition, plug gap, tightness of condenser, etc. Then run her up in the dark with the bonnet open, and see if you can see any tracking under there.

ah!
plenty to take on board there chaps!
thankyou all very much!
i do mean that!
i'm a total numpty with engines!
the only thing i really know about is 'worzel gummidge'!
god knows why!
i once had a p6 that broke down on its maiden voyage with me and it was dark and it was like a funfair under the bonnet! very pretty!
and towed home!
