Manual Gearbox cross-shaft bushes

Dear Forum,

I have two gearboxes, both of which have a metal-to-metal mismatch between gearstick 'olive' and cross-shaft 'ring'. One has phosphor-bronze bushes in the two small 'bulkheads' that the cross-shaft passes through within the remote housing on its way to the selectors and the other does not. I have replaced the two 'missing' plastic bushes in the remote without the bronze bushes with new plastic bushes and I was wondering which remote to use in my rebuild?

Do I use the remote housing with the bronze bushes or that with the new plastic bushes? Which is less likely to cause gearstick 'buzz? I imagine the plastic inserted one will be quieter? Which was earlier and which later, please?

I intend to resolve the mismatched steel 'olive' to steel cross-shaft 'ring' problem by either drilling out and fitting the plastic bush (not sure if the cross-shaft ring will be strong enough once sufficient metal has been removed to facilitate insertion of the plastic bush) or by finding a later-type replacement cross-shaft able to accept the plastic bush within which the metal 'olive' engages.

Dear Forum, please be patient with me and these questions, my 2200SC engine and gearbox are totally and completely disassembled on the floor, are being re-shelled, ringed, and new hard valves and seats inserted etc, etc, and accordingly, I may as well get reassembly just right! :!: :!:

What do you think, please?

Best regards,

Ray and Roy the Rover

As standard the remotes only had the plastic bushes, bronze bushes are an aftermarket replacement. The bronze ones will last longer, but I tend to agree with you that they would make gearlever buzz more likely.
