Meet Mr Manky.The 1964 Moggie 1000 Traveller!!

Re: I have a new project!

I do like the superb access you get with a Moggie's engine bay. Though as far as owning one goes, they're not really my cup of tea.

Re: I have a new project!

You either love em or hate em!
Bit like beetles and mini's they have a historic place in the motoring world.
Got called in to my p/t job this aft for an urgent delivery!
I went in the TR6 and got chatting to the boss about classics!
Result being, :) I may have some very interesting news re the manky moggie tomorrow or by the weekend!!
I will let you all know if it works out as I think it might! " Could be :D "
Right, now to get the engine in!

Re: I have a new project!

Engine is now in,and still running ok,but once the water was connected it was found the waterpump gasket was leaking.
On removal the main outlet was also corroded,so am getting a new pump and bypass hose today.
There were bound to be a few niggles, and once this one is sorted,I can fire it up again and let it run up to temp, and get everything set up ready for the road.
Hopefully there wont be any more niggles to sort, but as its just woken up after 25yrs with a new donor heart, and had its other bits tinkered with, once its out on the road and starts to loosen up a bit, there are bound to be a few more to sort out!

Re: I have a new project! Meet The Manky Moggie!!

New water pump fitted and now the engine is running quite well without any oil/water leaks on the basic setting up.
Was going to spend the day just getting it running dead right by resetting tappets, cleaning out carb again, resetting plugs, points etc,but NAH!
Too damned hot to play with engines!
So as I also managed to get 2 good s/h brake adjusters along with the new waterpump and bypass hose that I swapped 2 cylinder heads for,I decided to finish off the brake rebuild! :)
The only really stiff connection"into the master" decided to snap the pipe,so I have to get a new master to front section in the morning from my local MM parts dealer.

Re: I have a new project! Meet The Manky Moggie!!

Well ive managed to find and win a near complete dark blue interior for the manky moggie! :)
Seats,door cards,trims,carpets!
Supposedly its leather, but I have my doubts, but will be well pleased if it is.
Seller refused my offer of £100 cash as he wanted lots more, but after a last second E-bay bid with my itchy trigger finger,I was relieved to find I won it for not a lot more, and within my max bid! :D
I just pipped a fellow forumite and traveller owner for it,but it really was the wrong colour for his red car! :)
Am off way up to Nottingham in the morning,on a 300m round trip to collect it,so watch out for me and my white P6V8 reg;PLK 1E on a mission!
Ive got to TRY my VERY best and keep to a good economical speed though! Yeah right!! :)

Re: I have a new project! Meet The Manky Moggie!!

Sadly it didnt turn out to be leather, but its 99% damage free, and could do with a good clean, and will at least make the interior less manky!
Couple of creases due to storage, but a few hours in the warm should settle them out.
Was lucky enough to pick up a nice pair of rebuilt front calipers and good discs for the TR6 from him for a bargain £15,and my local engineer skimmed both the discs for a tenner,as one had a slight groove.
Also picked up a decent set of trims and hubcaps.

Re: I have a new project! Meet The Manky Moggie!!

Engine fitting and setting up all finished and its running sweet! :)
Lets hope the gearbox and axle are OK??
All the electrics now working to satisfaction for the MOT!
Just got to bleed the brakes if I get enough time this week!
Source a set of new 155 x 14 tyres! "Any ideas anyone for best make and a supplier?"
Then give it the final going over and get it in for its 1st MOT since 1987.
Interior and wheel trims can wait till its passed.
Apart from the obvious mechanical/electrical repairs needed, and new tyres,I am presenting it for MOT as found, with old and new cobwebs, dirt, dust, and other detritus, dog snot/slobber on inner rear windows and all!! :)
But I may have to clean the front screen and door windows,so I can see where I am going!
He will probably have a heart attack when I turn up in it!! :D

Re: I have a new project! Meet The Manky Moggie!!

Bit like the bloke in the current Practically Carsick who is proud of his rusty Mo Minor !

Re: I have a new project! Meet The Manky Moggie!!

He is local to me,and I have sent him an Email.
I hope we can display both cars together at a future show!

Re: I have a new project! Meet The Manky Moggie!!

Mr Mankys brakes are now all bled and adjusted, and hopefully working nearly as good as when new! :)
In the morning,I just have to bolt on the front panel and bumper, then I will give it a really close final inspection,to make sure theres nothing silly ive missed,or any excuse for Mr MOT to fail it.
Am taking wheels to have 4 new tyres fitted tomorrow lunchtime, and then will see if they have a MOT slot available before closing time!
I do hope it doesnt rain! :(
Its been kept dry for 26yrs,and I dont want all those years of storage dust and cobwebs patina to get washed off!!

Re: I have a new project! Meet The Manky Moggie!!

Not officially.
I want to use it for a while to do a few last season shows!
Maybe win Dog of the day!
If the right offer comes along then I will sell, but still thinking of doing a resto over the winter, ready to sell for next season!
Got to do the maths to see if its worth me doing, then selling -V- selling now as is for an enthusiast to restore it how they want it.
And you never know what tasty project could turn up tomorrow, next week/month??!!

Re: I have a new project! Meet The Manky Moggie!!

Hi Pilkie - is it ever possible to advertise the car as 'for sale with a restoration' and give the purchaser the ability to specify how parts of the restoration are completed? I just thought it may be a way to lock in fees up front, perhaps get some downpayment to help with the build months and then have a guaranteed end purchaser.

With the well documented work on the MG as a 'CV' at the shows perhaps some people would be interested...

Re: I have a new project! Meet The Manky Moggie!!

I have been approached with that in mind from 2 potential buyers,so its a possibility.
However that method will inevitably have its drawbacks, like change of mind!

Re: I have a new project! Meet The Manky Moggie!!

I'd imagine you've got to do a lot of Manky Moggie projects to earn a living out of it

Re: I have a new project! Meet The Manky Moggie!!

Oficcially, earning a living out of it is a no go,as I cant work from home!!
So will content myself with doing a resto per year, and a few jobs on the Q/T! and earning a few quid out of it to pay for my own classic addiction or holidays!
That means I will either have to find a suitably well paid p/t job or 2 or a full time job I will enjoy doing!

Re: I have a new project! Meet The Manky Moggie!!

full time job I will enjoy doing!
- any idea what ?
There's quite a few things I'd like to do but it's all the targets and management b*llsh*t that make retirement so appealing

Re: I have a new project! Meet The Manky Moggie!!

I do have a lead to a possible p/t job working at a classic car restorers not far from me!
Will have to pop over when I get the chance and have a chat!
2 x p/t jobs will do me fine if the overall pay is adequate!

Meanwhile here is a linky thingy to Mr Mankys beauty shot album!

Re: I have a new project! Meet The Manky Moggie!!

These are the pics being referred to,along with a few words from Casper.

My human says Mr Manky is my car really! :D
It doesnt matter if I get my paw prints on it,scratch it or dribble on it when I have a kip!!
ITS PURRFECT!!!

Makes for a handy step that bumper! :)
