melted hydraulic pipe to clutch

Hi, at long, long last the heads are back on my 3500s, the engine is running after a lot of electrics problems, believe it or not the plug leads were all one position out in the dizzy cap. I hadn't moved them neither had my mate who was helping me with the blown head gasket so a ghost has been busy!! It's running very uneavenly at the moment but will have the timing and carbs sorted to cure it.
We left the engine running for quite a while to check for leaks, overheating etc and after quite a while a cloud of smoke forced a stop. On inspection we found that the heat from the exhaust had caused the clutch hydraulic pipe to rupture and drop hydraulic fluid over the exhaust. I know the gearbox had been changed before I got it to a 5 speed box and am wondering if this is the problem, i've looked in the service manual and it looks as if the hydraulic pipe runs over the top of the exhaust with a 4 speed box.
Has anybody had a similar problem and come up with a good solution or have I just been unlucky with the pipe, actually I think i've probably been lucky as if it had gone whilst driving I would have lost all braking!
