More 5-speed waffle... MX5?

Do Toyota have the Cressida range in UK? I have a Cressida box sitting at home waiting for me to extractum digitum and see if I can make it work for me. They are popular in SA among the racing fraternity and there are lots of ratios available to fiddle with.

As the owner of a '90 MX5, they are very nice gearboxes to use - a nice smooth shift.

That said, the gear ratios of my MX5 really wouldn't suit a P6. You'd need to ensure you have a suitable diff ratio as otherwise you'll quickly be frustrated with it on the motorway - I don't know how the 2000 diff ratio compares to the MX5.

I think the 6 speed boxes have lower (i.e. more revvy) gear ratios than the 5 speed, so would need an even taller diff. The 6 speed box MX5s already came with a higher diff ratio than the 5 speed to compensate, and have a similar overall ratio to the 5 speed in top gear.

The one we had was very low geared too. I've just had a squint around the 'net and found that the MX5 final drive is 4.1:1 and fifth gear is 0.8:1 so running it with either of the Rover diffs will give a reduction in cruising revs.

Willy, if those MX5 boxes are only 20 quid what are you waiting for?

Perfect! Thanks.

Well there is a 60 pounds delivery cost as I'm not planning to be anywhere near Newcastle for a while.
Reckon I'll look around locally. If I can get one for 50 or so, it'd be worth butchering to see what's possible. Although we now know that the 5-speeds have an integral bellhousing, the castings appear to have bulges around the "split line" as if they were intended to be bolted. And I do have a couple of spare P6 bellhousings and the number of a chap who does ally welding...

unstable load, Cressidas were never common in the UK. I'd guess survivors are probably in single figures by now. :(

An Omega engine and box could be an interesting conversion.
The 4 pot ones go fairly well for what they are, the V6 ones fly, but are an utter twat to work on, 29 hour book time for head gaskets anyone?

If you had space to work on it in the car then worth it, otherwise best avoided.
