MOT Changes

I know there were some changes made to MOTs this year - does anyone know whether having a non working speedometer is a mot failure?
Thanks
Kelly

I think it is, but you'd be wise to check, although quite how they propose to check it I'm not sure either.

It may just be a cursory check whilst doing the brake roller test run?
So all you need now is someone who let's you drive the car during the test 'because it's old and confusing'

As said, a non working speedo is not an MOT failure as they dont check it. But it is illegal to drive a car with a non working one

Does a speed figure on your satnav count as a Speedo if you're pulled over?

If the odometer's not working either, try to avoid going to the next MOT with the same mileage showing.

Who me? Anyway Land Rovers don't go fast enough to need one.

Jim, I would say a sat nav is not appropriate, from the point of view your mileage is not being recorded.

Going by this handy Government guide, looks like a non-working speedo could be a failure I'm afraid. It doesn't seem to mention the odometer though. Going by the wording on current V5C documents, I suspect that it is not a legal requirement to record vehicle mileage. If it was it would present problems as your standard car does not have a calibrated odometer.

Body or vehicle structure and general items

As a M.o.T tester there are no fail requirments for a spedometer. nor is there any for a mileage record. we pysically cant check the speedo on every car. We can only drive your cars on the road if we are carrying out a decelerometer brake test or checking wheel bearing, brake pull etc...

:) Thanks for that. Interesting that you are an MOT-tester. You may be able to help with some of the questions that come up on the forum from time to time about what is/isn't a failure. :D. I was talking to the guy at my local MOT garage the other day and he was complaining that some modern cars represent a bit if a challenge - e.g. they can't always see the condition of things like brake hoses without taking wheels off (which you aren't allowed to do).

I think the general rule is,if you cant see it,you cant move anything or clean anything to get access to it,you cant check it,therefore you cant fail it!
BUT!!
If a car is presented in a totally filthy, loads of caked on mud and other stuff under the arches etc,the car can be deemed unfit to be MOT'd until it is suitably cleaned,as this in itself can limit the movement of susp and steering controls!

I have just been looking at new mot regulations from 7th april 2012, by the dft, to comply with european testing procedures,

it states, and i quote...speedometer, the car will fail if a speedometer is not fitted, is incomplete, INOPERATIVE, has a dial glass broken/missing or cannot be illuminated.

goes on to state other new rules which affect, electronic parking brake, electronic stability control, warning lights, lighting, electrical wiring and battery,trailer/caravan elec socket, tyres, restraints, seats, doors, towbars, exhaust and fuel system,

some of the above will not apply obviously to classic cars.

Will the car go fast enough on the brake roller to see if the speedo works? Or is it relying on the tester driving the car from parked to the test bay ?
