My TC, back on the road :)

Right!..bit of an update guys. My rover TC is now back on the road..but first a quick update :) Now my history with
P6's began only last september when i purchased a blue SC Auto off ebay from some chap in southampton. Was told
at the time it needed "some welding" but to cut a long story short, was hanging underneath and had got so bad it
was beyond my finances. I sold the car on to a friend of mine who took it on as a project as he could weld. In the
meantime i went on and purchased another, this time a TC again from Ebay and brought it back from Lincolnshire
without problems. I was aware at the time that the bottom end was knocking at higher revs, but most old engines
can go on forever like this, so just put up with it. By the end of december it had become quite poorly despite me
nursing everywhere and eventually gave up one day in early January. I was able to drive it home, but on inspection
revealed it now had low compression on one cylinder and was now making a hell of a racket from the top-end.

I spoke to my mate who'd had my first car, who had decided it was actually beyond his skill to really repair it or even
get it to a mot standard, and i agreed to buy the car back for the engine and for spares. Now i didn't really want to
see a P6 scrapped, but with the advice of my friends i decided it was the best, not to mention most sensible thing
to do bearing in mind the car was local, and had all the bit's i'd need, not to mention a load of useful spares.

SInce then ive been busy. The last two weeks have been spent stripping one car for all its parts, removing engine etc and
disposing of the rest. My TC has been up at a mates garage, where ive spent the last week off work removing and
switching engines which has been a learning curve!. :D

My first time doing an engine swap. Went very well all things considered. My TC had always been a manual, but the donor
engine was in an auto, so ive spent time switching fly-wheels, putting in a new spigot bearing and taken the chance to fit a new clutch.... it's all gone very smoothly.

I was able to use the exhaust from the Auto on my TC which fit fine with a bit of adjustment and the engine turn's out to be
sweet as a nut :D ....Next onto the paint work. Ive sourced some 3500 wheel trims, and a vinyl roof kit which she's going have after ive had the body-work tidyed up.

Anyway enough rambling. Time to put the kettle on, and here's some pictures for your amusement!.

Just one corner of the reasons why this wont see the road again :(

Final connection of gearbox back up to engine, then its radiator back in, few bits and bobs, then time for another well deserved cuppa :D

My word! Instant restoration! Not seen anything that quick on here before. Well done!

The bottom of that Auto is so rotten I can't even decide which area I'n looking at! Definitely a scrapper!

The only downer is that you are now running an SC instead of a TC. There's a new (!) TC head on Ebay at the moment if you're interested. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=180635159319&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT

For a few future jobs, it's probably as well to change the main and big end bearings in your new engine. They are a routine wear item in the 4 cyl engine due to the cylinder block being less than rigid. You can do them with the engine in situ and it isn't that challenging. There are some write ups to search for on here. You can also rebuild your TC head at leisure to get the performance back up to scratch. More involved, but you won't have time pressure against you,

Look forward to seeing you at a few meets this year!

Chris

Yes i going to keep hold of the other block. At some point ile pull it apart to actually see what happened.
The TC carbs were fine, so will keep hold of them. Might purchase another car at some point to keep again
for spares. Once bitten and all that. The SC's engine had only 70,000 miles according to the clocks, which were
still working. Yes its a shame about the rest of the car, but it's soul lives on! :)

Just in-case anyone was wondering why i'd had to change my engine over..apart from a rather severe bottom end knock..we discovered this!..

Oh dear :(..that'l be a valve seat then!

Not to sure it's meant to be like that :(

Either my engines been on chicken tikka, or those are some pretty manky water ways.

We also found some rather interesting damage to the pistons..think ile re-use the block as a coffee table :)

I dont think the waterways arent that bad on yours. If i remember rightly it can be a lot worse than that!

Rich.

I was only saying to someone else on here the other day about valve seats dropping out. There's one you prepared earlier

The sludge is standard, they all come with that

Re: My TC, back on the road..MORE PICS

Righto..well to recap my TC, now an SC is back on the road after a dropped valve seat and a severe bottom
end knock killed it's original power plant.

Heres some more pics, since then ive been busy tidying engine bay & swapping bumpers from my donor car
to tart her up a little.

Engine bay!..with painted up air box
In process of swapping front bumper, took time to clean up front panel

Trial fitting some series one grill pieces for a laugh..not sure whether ile still fit these so..not decided yet.
