Mysterious Hole in the Base Unit

Can anyone suggest a reason why Rover put a hole in the base unit here - other than to let water into the boot?

It's just under the edge of the decker panel and goes into the box section that goes across the top if the boot. It had a small bung in it and there's an identical one on the other side. If there's no valid reason for it to be there I shall weld it up to stop the water getting in.

So THAT'S where all the water's coming from!

I lifted the boot last week for the first time in about a fortnight to find a 2 inch lake at the bottom!! I had to take the bungs out to drain it. Good job I rustproofed the boot floor last summer. I've had the rear wings off looking for holes in the rain channels, as I had a hole there before. I blocked it up with some quiksteel. It might be just as easy for you to do that save cutting a little plate out and welding it on.

There is meant to be a threaded rod fitted there if I remember, srews into a captive nut on the decker and then two nuts to adjust the height of the decker, the 2nd nut to lock the fitting into position in the hole you have photographed.

Around the two adjusting nuts are a couple of metal washers and a rubber washer to stop water getting into the boot

Yes - thats what pae has. It was leaking water through because it wasnt tightened... ( and that's what cause all the boot and wheel arch rot...)

*edit* or is that the front of the panel???

The threaded rods are on the front endge of the decker panel, not the rear one.
So there is no obvious reason for those holes to be there.
At least my TC doesn't have them.

Does your V8 have them?

I don't think so and the boot doesn't fill with water either. It's at the mother in laws at the moment which is 40miles away so I haven't seen it since Christmas.

I don't know why you'd inject wax through a hole there because the box section is open inside the boot. They're neatly drilled holes and painted too so I thought they may be a peculiarity to earlyish series 1 cars - it' was registered in Feb '67.

Maybe Chris or Nick might know?

I checked and the hole with the decker panel adjuster that leaked on pae is at the front of the panel, not there at the rear...

IIRC mine have plastic caps 'factory fitted' in them 8)

Phil, there was a plastic bung in the hole on each side, but they didn't keep the water out of the boot. If there's no good reason for them to be there I'll weld them up 'cos a boot full of water is tedious at best.

I've just looked through the pictures of EMF's respray last year and it doesn't have a hole in that place, only the one for the decker panel mount.
