nearside rear calliper malady! - an amateur needs some advice...

hello folks can any of you please help me? i've just had a call from my local garage telling me that my nearside rear calliper is weeping brake fluid and needs to be fixed! they say they cannot do it because the rear brakes are mounted in-board and they do not have the correct tools to rectify the problem! i could top up my brake fluid every other day or so but that would be both boring and dangerous!!! so could somebody tell me if there is a calliper rebuild kit available and if so how much does it cost? if not how much would it cost for me to get a garage to rebuild it? please help me as i love my car and i want to get it back on the road as soon as possible!!! also does anybody live in the walton/weybridge/shepperton area who owns a P6 and may be able to help me please? i thank you all in advance for your help, all the best folks...

Grifterkid,
I had a nearside rear caliper fitted with a seal kit, which I supplied, for £152 last year. Seal kit cost about £20 for 2 sets. There should be a thread on this website still.
You do not need any special tools as, once the pads are out and the disc removed, a screwdriver is perfectly adequate for winding the piston back in.
I was going to do it myself but discovered there is not enough clearance betweem de-dion tube and floor unless you can ramp the back of the car high enough or have a pit to work in.
My previous house had a large garage with a pit which I miss since moving to our new house.
Hope this helps with your decisions.
Regards, John.

I have had the rear cals off a few times.

The kits are easy enough to do, if you are slighty handy. The most difficult thing about the job is the remove and refitting. I find that holding the cal up in the air try to put them back was quite a strain.

Plan for the kits and a pair of flexi hoses as it would be false economy to use the old ones.

The first time I did P6 calipers I removed the discs too, but there is really no need to if you have a pit or ramp. A little bit of juggling and they just drop into place. And if you wind the piston in before refitting the caliper I've found they adjust up fine as they're being bled and a few miles use.

While the caliper is out, pays to make sure the adjustment mechanism is top notch.

'Fraid so! Could fit three cars, or two cars side-by-side and a decent workshop area. Sadly no garden for my wife so a move was on the cards. Moved six years ago and don't reget it a bit! Well, apart from not being able to afford the petrol for our everday 3500 and having to exchange it for an eurobox - Oh, and the lack of garage facilities - Hello, better start a list!
Regards, John.
p.s. I won't mention the skip full of P6 parts that I had to part with prior to moving!
