New Core plugs weeping on my new recon block

Hi Guys,

I've just finished my engine rebuild, I replaced the core plugs on the recon short block before refitting into the car, just as well as the old ones were rusted through upon removing them.

After filling with new coolant & fresh oil, priming the engine with my priming tool & drill, I notice small drips coming from the N/S core plugs, front & middle...grrrrr

I tapped the middle one in about an extra 1mm but the as you know the front one is behind the engine mount..typical.

Anyway with nerves & fingers crossed I turned the key & to my delight she started straight away & sounds lovely :D I let it run at 2000rpm for 20 mins to bed in the new 3.9 cam. Then I dropped the idle to about 1000rpm & set timing to 6BTDC.

Then I noticed a smal drip of fresh oil on the floor...b*gger I thought, looking underneath the N/S block and noticed a small amount of fresh green oil that looked to be coming from the drain tap on the block, funny I thought, is this possible ? I saw the the lock nut isnt fully wound back against the block, surely this cant make it leak ?

On checking a short while ago after the engine has been stopped for about 2 hrs , theres hardly any water or little oil, So would the cores plug settle in and 'seal' them selves or maybe add some rad weld for extra safty ?

As for the oil leak, I need to get under it whilest running & watch for signs.

Anyway apart from all that I 'm chuffed that it started first turn of the key, its been 3~4 months since I started the strip down of engine & engine bay, will post some pics on the thread once all the front panels are on.

Thanks Damian

Hi Damian,

Did you use any form of sealant between the core plugs and the block and on the thread of the drain taps?

Ron.

Hi Ron,

Yes Sorry, I forgot to mention that, I used a smere of blue Hylomar on the core plugs, the drain taps were not touched, I guess I should have checked them, still can do with the engine in the car.

Cheers Damian
