'New' engine in crate on Ebay

I don't ever remember them being like that, but that may be because I never fitted one. I can't remember if I ever did or not. The only recons that were like that were the military Land Rover ones, and I don't think the military ever used 2000 engines. I think if you'd bought that from a main dealer back in 1981, and obviously paid dealer prices for it, plus the fitting costs, and you opened the bonnet afterwards and it looked like that you'd have every right to think you'd been properly turned over.

I hope nobody buys it thinking it will go straight into an SC or auto.

Surely not? Why would Rover have covered them in that, knowing that it would have to be stripped off before being fitted into one of their customers cars? The standard paint would have protected them just as well & a quick scrub-up would have got rid of any residual dirt before fitment.

Whatever, I've asked the question anyway so we'll see what he says.

The rebuild plate is the same as that on my 2000's engine, with presumably the /90/020 meaning the rebore/grind it's had; although +90 thou seems a lot to me.

Probably had a quick spray over at some point. My 2000's engine looked normal (a filthy normal admittedly  )

Perhaps they used Rover 2200 pistons, which are 90.5 mm in diameter? +90 thou pistons were never a size which was available as far as I know. The largest was 40 thou for the 2000 motor.

James.
