The Elan is a lovely car to look at and most of all to drive (although the female attention isn't bad either... :mrgreen: )

Called the garage today, he'll start working on it tomorrow. He's going to replace the front part of the flooring (really the front part, anytong lik 20cm or so...) and some bad parts at the ends of the sills.

About the sills: as far as I know they are supposed to look like on my pictures (apart from the missing sideskirts ofcourse) but some people thought there was something wrong with them... Am I right, or am I wrong?

Do you mean that the sills and the bottom run onto the front wings are usually satin black on the later cars? :)

No, I mean the way they are build up... Because you have the bare sills, and in the middle below the gap between the doors another part in front of that as you can see very nicely on the top picture in this topic. They thought that it had to be like that all the way from front to back. That's not the case as far as I know, but it got me wondering. :)

My mistake, what I can see of yours look original. The thread you put a link too is correct too :)

Pictures taken with my phone, so some of them are bad.

Missing part on my rear suspension...?

I'm missing them on both sides... Could someone please upload a picture of what it's supposed to look like? What is the function of these parts?

Hello Thijs.
Check out this picture of the underside of my 3500 restoration from my thead 'The optimist' in Members Projects;

You can just about see the bump stop towers on either side of the photo up at the top. They have a threaded fitting for two conical rubber bump stops which limit the upward travel of the two large lower suspension arms.

When you need them, you'll really know they are missing! I guess not many of us carry passengers in the rear. If you do you'll find the bump stops are in regular use! In fact they are not so much stops as part of the suspension. They are intended to give an element of varaible spring rate. Pure bump stops to be found on lesser cars are much smaller and more solid.

I love the pictures of your car..look's great in red :). I had to scrap a P6 because the rust had got so bad it was too
much work to repair. But the engine is now in my other TC and lives on!

Welding is now almost done, looks great again. 8) Just ordered a new down pipe in stainless steel, both the welding and the exhaust part made quite a big hole in my wallet. :? Lets hope it's worth it! :LOL:

Question about the bumpstops; if they are rusted away like mine, how hard is it to replace them?

You can get new bump stops from Ian at rover classics.The supports for them are a little more tricky - JR Wadhams list them for £24 a side which seems a lot so I'm going to attempt to make a couple up. I just need to find a nut that fits the bump stop itself and weld it into the bottom of my fabricated mount. When I do this i'll post pics in PAE's thread, dont think it'll be this weekend though! (Need to finish what i've started first!)

Rich.
