New Rolling Tax Exempt e-petition

signed... sad that 74 and 75 plate cars are getting ringed or reshelled for the free tax.

I'm going to play devil's advocate here... And before anyone says anything, I know my car is tax exempt already, but I was wondering, with the government trying to squeeze every last penny out of everyone, with cuts on cuts everywhere, I'm not sure that reminding them that there is already a tax exempt system out there is altogether a good idea. I wouldn't put it past them to think about scrapping the scheme altogether..

I'm not saying that I wouldn't support a rolling tax exempt scheme, I think its a great idea for us classic owners. but I don't think now is the right time to start reminding the government about such things..

Right, now that's set the cat amongst the pigeons, I'll fetch me coat...

I have to say I agree with V8P6B on this one.

I'm a little spoilt because my cars are both tax exempt but I'm not sure it's such a good idea to highlight this to the govt just now.

That said I'd happily pay road tax to drive both my cars. When I bought my first P6 the tax exemption wasn't even a consideration.

This is also being highlighted on a few other forums too so I suspect there will be a bit of debate anyway.

I think the problem is that it is now an unfair scheme, I mean why should a 72 p6 be tax exempt when a 73 isn't. I think they should either scrap it, or preferably introduce the rolling aspect, so that everybody becomes entitled eventually.

It has certainly contributed to the high number of "rung" P6's, and probably other makes/models too.

I have signed the petition

Edit... Actually I think they should just scrap the tax altogether and put it on the fuel duty, but that'll never happen.

They have, they just forgot to cancel the road tax

also signed it and stuck it on my facebook i hope they do bring it back cause they bloody change it i had to help my last p6 2200 1973 bloody straight motor prod of ended up getting scrapped as its never been taxed since i sold it

Signed and forwarded it on to my car nut friends. It's a Daft system with a Daft cut off period that makes pre 73 cars more desirable and valuable than identical vehicles made a year later. Neither of my classics qualify leaving me with potentially a £400 bill every year...... It's easy to see why people ring.classics to make them tax exempt, the mini community is rife with mid 80s mini citys mascarading as 1960s mk1s when the only thing that's original is the registration number (im actually amazed that its not picked up on because its so obvious
