Hi JVY, looking up at the gearbox from under the car just behind to tail shaft you can see the selector rods which link to the main gear selector rod via a bush. If you can get your hand on rod from gear lever & rock it back & forwards, there will be some slack (about 4-mm if like mine). This is excessive, should be 1-2mm max & when travelling over 45mph the natural movement of the box & rod causes chatter. I could not see clearly whether it is a nylon bush or phosphor bronze but which ever one it is i am sure this is causing the problem. If i find one i will let you know & likewise if i make one. I think the prop will have to come down to get access but all external box work so not too involved. Cheers Mark

Sounds like you mean the selector striker lever, which are still available new, I know JRW used to sell them, and possibly other specialist suppiers as well. Early ones were all metal, later ones has a plastic bush on the bottom in an effort to cure gearlever buzz, which breaks and falls off. Both types can be welded/brazed up and reprofiled. They can be done with the gearbox in-situ, but the engine/box has to be dropped back to enable the remote to be removed.

Yes that would be the part i think. JRW catalogue off line at moment for updating but will re-check again soon.I will have to get under car at weekend if poss & see what can be done because it drives me nuts on a long run. Never had it on my previous two cars but of course they were not as old then so not so many years of wear.

I replaced the selector striker on my own car about a year or so ago and it made a huge improvement to the gear selection. Of course the other thing that might accentuate the gearstick vibration is a worn UJ on the front of the prop shaft. Mine suffered from this recently and caused the gear stick to vibrate horrendously. Good luck getting it sorted.

The thread for when I did mine is here. All the relevant pics are on page 3 I think, but page 2 has some pics of the end of gearsticks for comparison.

I like that colour as well, quite unusual and suits it.
As a westcountry member, it would be good to see a few Rovers at Mount Edgecumbe show if possible - usually first Sun in August. Will have to go and see if I can confirm that now

Mount Edgecumbe is on August 7th this year, was thinking about taking Rover & poss wife taking her Minor (unless she`s working). I will look into it in more detail. As promised some pictures of work in progress. There are more somewhere but cant find them at present.

Thanks for the advice regarding gears. I contacted JRW & they had a striker in stock which i have now fitted & this has made a great improvement to gears. Looking at the pictures & with a vague recollection from my apprentice days i seem to remember an anti rattle spring plate that fitted above the selector rod against the aluminium casing to help keep vibration to a minimum. I have not found one but a LandRover cooling fan housing clip seems to be quite effective ( had one in my gosh box) so can now drive with no/minimal rattle.
