Hello there, just registered for the forum, up in the Lancashire area, got a P6 2200TC for my 50th birthday, some of you may recognise her, affectionally known as 'chatterbox' i believe.
Anyway 'CHA14T' is in safe hands, i'll be using her on and off this season and maybe next before she takes her turn in my classic fleet to recieve some TLC. She's not perfect but has bags of charisma, though she's a little tired in the engine dept, but so far still running, maybe see some of you around

regards

Ian

Welcome to the forum, Im in sunny Manchester so not far away, you will find this forum fantastic for any work you need to do on any p6.

Hi Ian

Welcome to the forum. Glad to see the chatterbox back. Hope she's enjoying her new home.

Dave

Thanks for the welcome guys, I'll be out and about in Chatterbox as soon as i fettle one or two little jobs, the engine rebuild will have to wait it's turn, but i just hope to enjoy her for the moment. Might even consider a 3500s to keep her company if i can find the right motor, you just never know!

I'll post some pics as soon as i get some decent shots

Hi Ian,

Welcome to the forum.
I live near Southport, so not too far when the weather's fine!

Might catch you around and about some time!
Are you coming to the Wood Vale rally in a few weeks?

Michael

Hi Michael,

hadn't actually thought about it but i might see if i can get in, do you know who organises it

Hi Ian,

The website is below. You can download the entry form and email it back. It's only a fiver to get in and it's a full weekend out. Not all of the cars are concours (although for some reason everybody is technically entered into the competition!)

http://www.woodvalerally.com/book-now/book-by-post
It's the 'Vintage Vehicle Entry' form.

Might see you there,

Michael

Well, what can I say, as the previous owner.

For starters, Welcome to the forum, and I really hope you enjoy her as much as I have. You have a very rare car in your hands. The reason I got Nick to sell her for me was because of the engine problem - I wasn't sure of how much longer her engine was going to last at 139,000 and I didn't have the funds or knowledge to do a full rebuild; but also at the same time I had the hots for a 3500S, which I now own. Only recently have I really missed her, and I would love to see her again - I do regret selling her now. She was a joy to drive, despite the engine problem.

May I ask - is she still playing hard to start, and ever-so slight missfire, while putting oil through her breather into the air filter? If so, Seriously enjoy her and all the best with Chatterbox, I hope you enjoy her with her many interesting special features, and that every time you 'hop in' she puts as big a smile on your face as she did myself. And of course enjoy working on her. :)

Cheers, Adam Birch.

Hi Ian
Welcome to the Forum. We need an update on the Chatterbox!
Cheers
Nick

Hi Adam, Nick

to be honest I have not had the time to do too much too her yet due to a series of unfortunate events and some projects on the house going slightly pear shaped. Along with 'Chatterbox' I also bought a Jensen Healey so two cars for my 50th, the Healey preceeded to breakdown on the journey home, since found out to be electrical problems. Being an Electrical Engineer by trade it made sense to sort the Healey first which i have done. 'Chatterbox' has had a couple of runs out and behaved very well, as you say she is a nice drive, she's no harder to start than the Jensen and starts everytime, i'm going to run her for the season or until the engine dies whichever comes first. This week I'm going to give her a service, new plugs, points, filters, oil etc, i've seen worse engines but once i have my new workshop built i'm going to whip the engine out and strip it down. At the moment i'm looking for some Bronze front seats to replace the tired ones (whilst i restore them) in her or alternatively i'll pick up a completely different interior so that i can get all the seats refurbished.
I am very much more fond of this car than i am of the Jensen, and she cost a quarter of the price of the jensen, she sits inside my barn and looks great, ok I know i will have some tidying up to do on the inner shell eventually and her doors are a little rough around the edges, but hey shes 30 odd years old, has charisma by the bucketload, is a point of conversation because of her history, lovely numberplate, and looks like a proper classic car! By the way Adam I am very glad you parted with her, eventually i will bring her back to full health and i wont be parting with her, i know have the collection i'm happy with apart from missing a V8 but i will shortly address that problem, i'll keep you informed about her progress

Well you guy's were right the engine is a little tired, we went down to a local classics meet in Darwen and all the problems you mentioned seemed to manifest themselves, still i'll eek a bit more life out of her locally and during the winter give the engine a rebuild.

Nick/Adam what did you reckon to the gearbox do you think that might need any work whilst i have it out, i know it needs the bushes doing to stop it stirring around, and where is the best place to get some rubber gaiters for the gearbox and handbrake, ebay?

Read on the club website that Mark was selling some of his Rovers including the last 3500 seems a shame, though i'm thinking i might look out for a 3500 myself before too long maybe at the end of the season who knows. Still none of this dampens my enthusiasm especially after the classics meet on Wednesday, my friend took the Jensen and Chatterbox left it standing on the way home, i was mightily impressed even with a less than 100% engine.

Question has anyone ever fitted different carbs to the 2200TC like the dellorto's or webers to increse performance a little, just a thought

Gearboxes are not that hard to come by, we have several in stock, so when you have the engine out, change the whole lot. I have a friend who has two really superb (apparently) 2200TC engines sitting about (in North Wales) so there's an option.

The gearshift can be improved immeasurably with attention to the remote change when the rest is out. New bushes and a decent gearstick do wonders.

Cheers
Nick

Ian, Good to hear that she is at least still running, let alone beating other cars :D

I would recommend at least doing something to the gearbox, when I last ran her, there was bearing rumble from the gearbox - which went away after a few seconds of the clutch being depressed. I'm not sure if it was leyshaft or clutch release bearings. For the gaitors, ebay has a load, and so does Ian at Rover Classics: http://www.rover-classics.co.uk/partsli ... ategory=14

As regarding the carbs, I'd say just give them a rebuild and fine tune, stick with the HIF6's - The SU's are simple in terms of carburettor. I have heard of people putting the earlier 2000TC HD8 or HS8 carbs on, and the reviews are that these give more high end power, but as a consequence they zap the low down torque, taking away some of the character of the 2.2 engine. I haven't heard of people changing the 4 cylinder carburettors for a different make though - but V8's are easy (ish) to put on a single holley or webber for the power... Somewhere on this forum I've seen someone put 6 webbers on a new manifold for their v8, but now I've lost the blog :( lol

Just for some news - the other day, in the post, we received an insurance quote from the AA, for Chatterbox. £562!! It's a bit odd them randomly sending out a quote when we never insured her through the AA, and we're not using the AA anymore at all. Let alone the quote was, well, rather expensive to say the least. Just thought to let you know :)

Cheers anyway, Adam.

Hi Nick,

thanks for that, North Wales isn't that far from me so it might be worth a look, did you think the gearbox on chatterbox was past it's best, i'd rather keep all the bits together if I can. There's a platinum silver 3500s on ebay at the moment not far from me in Accrington, looked really nice too, very tempted, very tempted

Ian

Thanks Adam,

i've insured Chatterbox through Sureterm on a classic policy, the cost £87 fully comp, of course i have 4 cars insured with them so i do have a bit of leaveridge with the two Jensens and the Landrover. Nick also seems to think the gearbox would be better changed over we'll see, got to get the new tool shed built first before I can start anything, need to be able to lay my hands on all the tools and parts rather than spend hours looking for the right ones.
Still love the car though, more so now that I HPi checked her so I can add details to the history file, not a blot on the check whatsoever, more than can be said for what came up for the Jensen! Two cases of being an insurance loss and one case of outstanding finance, not a good result to say i'm not a happy bunny would be putting it mildly, got some research to do there,

Ian

I hadn't realised you had such an interesting stable, Ian. I'm particularely partial to Jensen GT's having had a very happy acquaintance with a Mk1 Healey in my youth. I'm not convinced I'd like to own one instead of Lucky, mind! As well would be OK though :) I think you ought to treat us to a photo shoot of your collection if you can find suitable ones to upload?

Chris

Hi Chris, when i fathom out how to post the pics i'll post some, i reckon it's the size of my pics i'll have problems with. The Jensen GT is a lovely car a ' Gentlemans sports carriage' is how they were originally introduced I think. The GT wants restoring though she is a solid base, the Healey is Taxed and tested and i use her, though the Hpi revelations through me a little. On that score Hpi have come back to me saying that many things have such short chassis numbers including Plant and Machinery and the outstanding finance and insurance right off in 2006 relate to other equipment and not my car, they apologise but cannot ammend my check report! Never mind the report what about my startled condition when the report came through originally! Anyway mostly reassured now, and i know i've enough work on these cars to keep me going for many years, though i still might add a 3500s just can't help myself almost bought a Range Rover on Tuesday but her indoors caught me out.
