Hello,
I'm Matthias, from the Netherlands and a fresh P6 owner. It's a 1975 3500 (originally from Switserland) and there's plenty of rust to tend too!! I must admit I got a bit freightened after I found this forum and saw the horrors that can lurk behind those outer sill covers. So after I got her home yesterday I immediately took out the rear seat and sill covers. The seat area is ok apart from the boxes on the left and right side which have some rust (and one big hole on the left side), but the sills will need some fresh steel as there are quite a few holes!
I'm looking forward to many smile miles, the ride home left a huge smile already in spite of some wobbling from the rear (she's a bit low on the rear suspension).

Welcome to the forum Matthias...great to have another representative from the Netherlands!

Will you be doing the welding yourself? There's lots of help and support on here - and plenty of people who've been faced with exactly the same issues you have with your P6.

Good Luck! :D

Welcome Matthias, i know where you are coming from when you see what some of the guys here find on their P6, but also when you read through the thread and then see the car finished its amazing. The help you get from this forum is fantastic, I have used it alot and although have not had any real horrors all the things I have had advice on I have managed to repair. These guys are worth their weight in gold so dont be shy in asking for help. Looking forward to seeing your thread and how you repair and enjoy your P6. cheers Mick

Welcome Matthais,
The good thing is once its all done you will know you have a great car that you can enjoy.
Happy Rovering :D

Greetings Matthias

Welcome to the forum. Apologies if we've caused you any concern over the extent of corrosion on our cars. My repair thread will have been one you looked at recently, as well as arthuy's "AR J" work.

As Rich (rockdemon) has said though, these sort of threads show that all of this work is well within the basic skills of many forum members and P6 owners. Important to note though that if you are going to ask someone else to do the work for you make sure it's done properly ie all corroded metal removed and replaced with good metal. Otherwise you end up making thing worse and will have to have the work redone in a few years time.

Plenty of advice and encouragement here if you want to have a go yourself too :D

Dave

Hello and welcome to the forum :)

That looks a little like PAE did before i started welding! Big job, but it can be done on a driveway with a cheap welder by someone who's never really welded before through the depths of the winter snow if you have the willpower!

Would be nice to see a project thread about your new purchase - You'll get plenty of advice at every stage if you do something like that. Kept me going at mine last winter!

Rich

Welcome!

THE iconic P6 V8 colour - I like! Hopefully the welding work won't stand in your way for too long!

Michael

Many thanks for the warm welcome! Inderdaad leuk om ook andere Nederlanders op een Engels forum te zien :D
I'll do the welding myself @ work, plenty of space & equipment there. Shouldn't be too much of a problem (fingers crossed)
Made some better pics today in the sunshine 8)

There's some rust on the roof, under the vinyl. I think I'll have a look around for a spare roof with a sun roof in it.

The Jensen wheels will need paint & polish and smaller tyres (205/60 is a bit too wide for my liking, but they'll do for now).

One thing I do not quite understand is why the rear end is so low. There is an 80ltr LPG tank in the boot, but it has some additional springs around the shock absorbers which should normally compensate for the extra weight??

Not so Dave. Matthias, you are going to find some interesting modifications behind the leading edge of the rear wheel arch. I'd love some pictures when you get to that. Fitting alloy wheels is a very hazardous topic with P6's!

Chris

Welcome - from another newbie. I love the colour combo on your car and can't wait to watch your progress as you turn her into a real head turner.

I've read about modifying wheel arches etc..will have to see what's been done when I take the rear wings off. The tyres do rub (or have rubbed) slightly on the arch though!
What's so difficult about alloy's on P6's apart from the width?

Also pretty new myself, from Ohio, in the United States. Your rust issues do not look all that bad, I've seen and repaired much worse! New to the P-6 myself, and in the middle of my first project. Did some homework first, and found where they are most prone to rot, what mechanical bugs they suffer, etc. Even with all that, I got myself a non runner, but with a little work, she came alive. You'll not find a better group of helpful people than on this forum. Best of luck and enjoyment on your excellent purchase!

Hi Matthias.

The problem with alloys on the P6 is two fold, both at the rear. First that the actual mudguard wraps over the wheel, especially at the front of the arch, and is quite narrow, such that the maximum width tyre that is comfortably accomodated is 205. Second that the offset required to get the tyre in the middle of the arch is very large and very unusual.

Your tyres are actually slightly smaller than standard in rolling diameter. The correct match would be 205/65 X 15. But that would make the tyre rubbing problem worse, as it takes the widest part of the tyre further out towards the critical pinch point.

Don't worry too much though. There is a solution, or rather several. Sowen has done a really neat mod on his project thread which qualifies as the "if all else fails" get out of jail card! There are a couple of other tweaks before you get that far though - start a new thread if you want to explore this now.

Chris

I'll try to contact Allen Myers - he had the same wheels on his P6 estate and said they went straight on
I think he was using some quite low profile tyres though

The low profile tyres bit is the key. If the rolling diameter is small enough to pull the wide bit of the tyre back from the pinch point all is well. BUT you then have a horrendously undergeared car - the P6 is undergeared with the standard rolling diameter tyre!

Chris

Hallo Matthias, welkom namens nog een Nederlander op dit forum.
Your car is looking good. Nice set of wheels too.

Regards,

Kees
