no fuel reading

The fuel gauge has just packed up on me.

Been underneath and touched the wires together and the gauge went up so assume its not electrical.Thing is earlier in the week when i was driving i heard a thud from the back and just thought it was a stone kicking off the wheel or something.

Could the float have dropped off or something?Is it repairable or do i need a new unit?Had a look at JR Wadhams and they're £45,ow!does anyone have an old tank with one still inside?
 
Doesn't it feel good when you fix something and it hasn't cost any money!

Couldn't get the locking ring off from underneath so ended up taking the whole tank out.Got it off ok once the tank was out and took out the sender unit.Everything looked as it should but when we unclipped the box that the float arm goes in to the very last wire was broken.

Managed to solder a new piece of wire on and hey presto job done!
