Oil additives.

Hello RT,

I am not familiar with that product at all, so I am not in a position to comment.

However, if the engine oil has sufficient ZDDP, then the need for an additive is redundant.

In the United States, the engine oils that are available have had the ZDDP content markedly reduced and as such ZDDP additives have an appeal.

Hi Ron,
May I ask what oil you are using? Over my way (Perth) it is difficult to source oil with sufficient zinc/phosphorous levels.

RT.

Hello RT,

No problem at all... :) I am using Penrite HPR30, which I find to be excellent. It is a 20W-60 mineral oil which contains more than sufficient ZDDP.

SuperCheapAuto stock it. Do you have these auto stores in Perth? Repco also stock it, and if they don't have what you require they just order some in.

Hello RT,

The one that I am using at present is made by K & N. Apart from air filters, they also do oil filters, although they are not readily available in Australia..the oil filters that is.

I have also used and still have Unipart GFE-145, Pennzoil PZ-2 and Coopers Z15A, which also have part number RTC-3186 from Land Rover. I have also used JRA branded filters which were around 20 years ago and in the last 3 years Ryco Z160. The Ryco filter is a very short one with a diameter not much wider than the rubber sealing ring.

Ron.

NB : The K & N part number is HP-2003.

Thanks for that Ron.
You have been most helpful.
Managed to source a K&N filter locally and got some Penrite HPR30 at Supercheap. I also noticed that they had an oil which was made for older vehicles, V8s etc. From memory it was a 20/70 (or perhaps 40/70????). Is this also a suitable oil?
:D

RT.

My pleasure RT,

Always glad to help where I can!

I need to obtain some more K & N oil filters, so can I ask please where abouts you sourced yours from?

With the Penrite oil, HPR50 is a 40W70 oil, which unless your engine is heavily worn with little in the way of oil pressure, I would not use.

Hi again Ron,

I obtained the filter through a company called Filter Supplies (WA). There number is (08) 9356 1655 and they are located in Welshpool, Perth.
They had one on the shelf but seemed surprised that it was there as it is an "odd fitting" according to them. Oh well, fair plays to me :D

Hope this helps.

RT.

Excellent,..thanks very much RT.. :D

Funny they should say that about the fitting,..from the VN Commodore pretty well right through to the current 6 plus litre offerings...can also use the same filter. I know because Ryco specify the Z160 for a raft of Commodores, and the thread size along with no filter bypass valve is the same as the K & N.
