Oil filter

Since the intermaweb is SUCH a convenience for us classic lovers - I'm hoping to find much of my servicing stuff out there on Ebay - where very often, postage is much cheaper than my usual suppliers.

My query is about oil filters for the V8. One on Ebay is listed as for the Land Rover Disco V8 (3.9) and is ALSO listed as compatible for our V8 (at £5.70).

One substantially cheaper (£4) (and a better make IMO) is listed as suitable for a V8 Rover SD1 but they DON'T list a P6.

I'd have thought they would be essentially the same filter - or am I missing something?

Hi, P6b, P5b and contemporary Range Rovers, oil filters have a thread of 13/16" unf. With the introduction of the SD1 in '77 they changed over to the 3/4" thread and Range Rovers followed suit. Beware that some motor factors and Ebay listers don't realise, even now. The 3/4" thread is a lot more commonly used across a wide variety of vehicles so can be picked up cheaper. Go onto a filter manufacturers website and check specifications and their cross references to find out filter numbers so you don't end up getting the wrong one. Mann filters is a good one for this. Another option is change the oil pump cover for an SD1 item to get the more popular 3/4" thread

Hi
I use fram PH25 availiable from many motor factors, sometimes colour of filters change from the orange which is norm to white, made in USA so are good quality.

K&N HP2003 is a really good oil filter. Their air filters aren't nearly as well proven. Ron (SydneyRoverP6B) did some illuminating research on this a few years back.

I like the k&n hp 2004 if you can find it, I think it's available for under a tenner. Bonus is it has the nut welded on the end for easy removal

Just to add to this thread a bit further, I fitted a Mahle OC118 to my 3500s yesterday with no issue. This is equivalent to Landrover part number RTC3186.
