Oil leak

Hi , I have a P5 V8 & it's leaking oil from the rear main. The sump is tight, the rocker covers are tight, the breathers are clear so I'm looking towards the seal. What sort of job is it to sort? I assume its engine out & strip but does the Chinese finger thing provide an option or is it a waste of time,if you know any other cause please let me know
Thanks

If you have an engine number starting "840" and ending with a "D" suffix it will be a lipseal. If it's a ropeseal the chinese finger tool does work but you can't use a standard pair of seals you need a longer one for the top half, and often when you remove the rear main cap you find the shells are worn down to the copper and need replacing, but all the shells can be replaced in-situ, and doing so will reduce any rear main oil leak. Using the chinese finger tool is awkward, but possible and should give good results.

I had a similar discussion here on the forum whilst my gearbox was out, and due to the PITA factor of the job, and the general unreliability of the rope seals (even a new one) I elected to leave mine as it was and put up with what is really a seep rather than a leak. However, with the car starting to get a bit of use again, the seepage has reduced significantly. Apart from an oozing de Dion seal, soon to be dealt with, it is the last leak left in my car. Because it's British, I have to leave one, just for the sake of form.

Hi guys

What a coincidence:
I was about to post a question about Jimmys oil seepage and read this.
But for one I´m sure that the P6 auto drivetrain is rather different from the P5´s - and I do not understand all of the above  :(

As I do not want to double-post a quite similar question, I would like to jump on to this thread and ask the following:
What can I do to reduce Jimmys oil seeping with the drivetrain in situ?

I am about to replace the gaskets of the engine and autobox oil sumps - is there anything else?

DANKE !!!

The most important thing is to make sure all of the engine breather system is correctly fitted, in good condition, and nice and clear. You can add checking the rocker cover gaskets to the sump gaskets.

Thanks again for the advice. Just to add, today I used the car & it didn't leak anything (even after warming up on the drive to clear frost) yet the same journey another day & it will leave a puddle about the size of a tea plate under the bell housing. You would think it would leak all the time would you not?. I have not had much to do with the early V8 more the four cylinder 200&2200. I have had dealings with later SD1 mk2 & range rover 4.2s. I have been offered a SD1mk1V8 on a type 65 (i think) gearbox from a friend as an option. Does anyone know if this would fit?

The engine will fit if you change the sump, exhaust manifolds, water pump, alternator bracket, oil filter housing, crank pulley and engine mountings over, (plus a few other bits that have slipped my mind probably) but all that is just a bolt-off bolt-on operation, getting a BW65 into a P5B means fabricating a rear mounting, and making a rod linkage for the selector, unless you use the P6B selector cable, but that will need a bracket fitted to the underside of the tunnel to locate it, so not a bolt in job, but nothing too difficult.

Great thanks Harvey, I did remember something about the cable/rod issues but that's not too major an issue then really. I will see how I get on with the linkage adjustment on the original box at the weekend then go from there. As it will be used for weddings I need to get it as reliable as possible. :)

I know it's a non-sequitur, but transexl, your signature is evidence of a very disturbed mind.

It takes a disturbed mind to proudly boast about Tobacco Leaf. ;)

... especially after so many people reacted like they did :( :?   :!:

- Colin Gould of Kingsdown Classics, who prepared Jimmy for TÜV, said on handing him over to us: "It´s a good car - but why that awful (!) colour?"
- The TÜV-Prüfer (MOT-inspector) did not know P6s, shook his head over the weirdness of it all AND COMPLAINED ABOUT THE COLOUR  :!:
(I meet him once in a while. His gaze when he askes about Jimmy makes it evident what he thinks about him - and US !)
- My neece of (then) four was smiling when she saw the car for the first time - and she said "it looks like a giant caramel pudding" - that saved the day :D

I am now EVER SO HAPPY to have a car that colour - we stand out EVERYWHERE :!:
Are there more P6s (in "Tobacco Leaf") up your way ?

Perhaps this is a sign of how disturbed my own mind is, but 14 years ago when Brown Rover was stripped down for a bare metal respray, I CHOSE to keep Tobacco Leaf! :? :!: I could have chosen any colour under the sun; God's entire palette was available to me; but I chose Tobacco Leaf, of my own free will! The reason was simple. If Brown Rover wasn't brown, how could I call it Brown Rover?

So now I drive around in what has been described as a giant turd, but I'm never short of comments. Brown Rover certainly stands out from the common hordes. I used to see a 3500 lurking about fairly regularly, and there was the occasional sighting of a local 2000; but I've seen neither for a long time and fear that Brown Rover is the last surviving example in this part of the world. It was certainly the only Tobacco Leaf P6, err, not at the 50th anniversary last month.

Brown's on the way back in - there's quite a few moderns now available in metallic brown colours!

Tobacco Leaf is a colour of its time, and providing they have tints, I think it looks good, I certainly wouldn't colour change one if it was sound. Other people not liking it is one of its plus points.

Oh no , here we go again ! this one'll end in tears and telling offs , i'm not getting involved this time , well not until i,ve finished me tea any way !
