oil level

hi jay here.

was out in my new buy today,3500s man.

went on long run, half way through 40mile spin,on overrun I get a wherring, whine from gears 1/2/3,not so bad in 4th.

got her home and checked gear oil level, took out filler plug, nothing to be seen,so ive filled it with ep90.

all was good, went on a run again, better, still faint noise, but ive no carpets or console in car.

30min after I parked it up,mad smell of gear oil  ,there was a pool,of oil, around a foot in diameter  .

it stopped dripping after 2hours and has now stopped, went for drive again, all ok,quite.

the question is,why noise in first place, when I topped it up did I over fill,i filled up to side filler plug, took over 2liters.

and lastly, when it leaked out and stopped, why it seems good and quite.

do you fill with one till it flows out of a lower site plug???

handbook gives no ideas.

help.

Gear box takes engine oil which is thinner and may leak even worse !
I'd fill it up , wash off the oil from the outside of the box and wait to see where it leaks from

hi dave,thanks for the info.

ok engine oil.

do I fill it til it comes out the filler plug??

the plug that can be seen through the hole in transmission tunnel??

let me know if anyone can throw light on it,dont want to be over filling the box  ,and messing up gaskets and seals.

Yes, that's right.

Many of us now prefer to use a Mini oil (mini's have the gearbox in the sump). A few oil manufacturers make an oil specially for this - Millers springs to mind - in their Classic range - which have had additives to make an engine grade oil as gear freindly - ie high shear strength - as possible.

Regarding the quantity the V8S gearbox takes 1.75 litres (3.25 pints), therefore i would imagine that over 2 litres is a little too much. Perhaps the car was not level when you filled it up?

car was level, and I filled it up til it just dripped out the filler plug.

so filling it to filler plug is good, yes??

is there any harm running gearbox on ep90?? or is it a big no no?

checked level again this morning, cant see the oil near the plug hole  .

jay

Fill it up till the oil dribbles out of the filler plug
I doubt you have much EP90 left in it at the rate your's seems to be leaking
I do remember someone continuing to drive one of these when the gearbox bearings(?) had gone and it cracked the case
I hope yours isn't that serious

The oil pumps struggle to pick up EP90 because it's too thick, but seeing as most of the oil pumps don't work anyway, and the boxes grenade themselves regardless, I don't think it will make a lot of difference.

hi lads, thanks dave, the answer I was looking for.

you fill box til it dribbles out filler plug.

hi Harvey,ok ep90 not good,i just put it in thinking the rover box took ep90,didnt know about the 20/50 thing  .

so should I drain it,or just keep topping it up with 90??

I got a donor car a month or 2 ago,so ive a dry spare box if this 1 blows up. :) .

thanks for all the imfo.

jay

Fill it up with 20/50 to see where it leaks from
Any cheap old 20/50 will do
Then when it's not leaking , drain it while warm and put some decent 20/50 in it

hi dave, oddly enough I did what you say there this morning, used Halfords 20/50 oil,put it in,up to level plug and it seemed ok,no leaks etc.

went for a long run,motorway stuff,around 70miles.

stopped at a petrol station, and saw the oil just gushing out of it,lucky I had more oil in boot, topped up and headed home.

its coming out the bell housing drain hole.

id say front seal has gone, gearbox out job  .

I mite just drain and put 90 back into it and fill it til it starts to leak and let it find its own level,it was ok with the ep90 at its own level lastime.

when it finds its level id say there is a bit over 1litre in it,not great but it seems ok?

it will keep me going til the winter months when il do a box swap.

open to suggestions on a replacement box?? same again which I have,lt77? or I hear of a ford transit box???

info on your thought would be great.

They don't have a front seal fitted. There's a scroll on the input shaft, and a gasket on the release housing. The only other thing that should be there is s shim in front of the first motion shaft bearing, which is there to restrict the amount of oil that can get from the main case to the release bearing via the bearing itself, and if the shim is missing, (and it's not a later type bearing with a built in restrictor) then it's not just gearbox out, it needs completely dismantling.

[EDIT] There is a seal on the release bearing shaft, but I've never seen one of those leak. You might be able to see if that one is leaking by looking into the hole in the bellhousing.

It offends my mechanical sympathies to say -run it with just one litre of EP90 in it , but in reality what have you got to lose ? The box is presumably beyond repair already.
I've not heard of a Ford Transit gear box transplant

If the only problem is the oil leak, and the rest of the box is quiet, and doesn't jump out of gear, then spend about twenty quid and cure the oil leaks.... (Providing you can do all the labour of course).

I hazard a guess that there's a lot of those boxes running around with only about a litre of EP90 in them though.....

hi lads, was out in p6 most of the day today, long runs at 70mph most of way. :D

started at 8am,looked under car,ive cardboard under it,small drip mark, around the size of a 2stg pound coin.

checked gear oil level, say its 2/3inch down from filler plug  . but this is the level it leaks to and then stops.

drove car 70mls,at 65/70mph,going well,no noises,ok gear change. parked up for 2hrs,looked under car,no drips,then another 50mls,all good gearbox wise,then a break again,no oil drips,and then 120mls home,touching 100mph in places racing a golf..

home now,put car into garage,left for a hour,no leaks,checked level,same level :D .

gearbox doesn't jump out of gear, and hot or cold no mad noises with ep90,or box being hot or cold.

so il just monitor for next while, and try stay away from golfs  .

il stick with ep90,as it seems to stick to the gears.

gear box said to have been rebuilt 7000mls ago,and it is so clean,as if its been chemicaly cleaned, also new paper gaskets sticking out from the joints in casings.

some one payed 1300euro for the job,id bring it back  .

il keep you posted.

hi,jason here.

I think all my gearbox worrys are over, bought a magic bottle of goo  ,its called "gearbox stop leak" made by a usa company called lucas of all names  .

filled box to level, allowing half a litre for the lucas liquid, put the level plug back in,and oil leak not 100percent gone but 2 drips a day instead of a 6inch pool every day  .

anybody else use any of there products???

new gear box in a bottle  :D .

jay

erm... not good - do a gear oil change quick assuming that's an auto and you might save it. It's what i tried in the death thows of my previous gearbox and it brought the end on catastrophically...! ( Make sure you get the right fluid!)

rockdemon, think your the wrong end of the table  ,manual box  .

yes gear change is nice with the additive.

ive been running the box on ep90 for the last few months,so ep90 and the lucas goop have saved the day :D .

she did a 170mls round trip today no problems, hot or cold, and keeping level fine.

I doubt its doing the box any good, either synchro rings or other things will start to go.

but for now she goes up and down the gears fine 2/3 and 3/4 and down again 4/3 and 3/2.

have a spare box in the wings anyway.

might be closing this thread yet :D watch this space 8)
